The latest book in the Cassandra Palmer series is out tomorrow and we are beyond excited for it! This is always one of our most anticipated reads of the year and is one of our Top Shelf Read and Recommendation for August. Today we have the wonderful Karen Chance to share with us a bit more about this book with you all. Help us give her a warm welcome.
Welcome to Under the Covers, Karen. What was the most fun part about writing this book?
I suppose finally being able to tie off some threads and do some reveals that I’d been anticipating for a long time. You have to set up the dominoes before you can knock them down, but you hope that the end result will be worth it. And in this case, it was. When all the pieces finally came together, it was the culmination of a huge amount of time and work, and was just so satisfying.
Having strong supporters for both Mircea and Pritkin, do you have a favorite thing about each of these characters?
I like Mircea for his twisty, creative intelligence and dogged determination. And the way he looks in a tux doesn’t hurt, either!
I like Pritkin for his loyalty and bravery, and his often acerbic wit. I just find him funny.
This series is very complex with its mythology. How do you keep track of the details and timelines?
It’s actually not complex at all. It’s just written sort of like a mystery or a puzzle and you don’t have all the pieces yet. When you do, I think it’s going to seem very straightforward. And you get quite a few of those pieces in Ride the Storm.
Not only are your books funny and entertaining, but they pack a great deal of action as well. How do you ensure a balance is maintained through all aspects of the book?
Action sequences have consequences, and so quieter pieces for the characters to take stock of what just happened, and to figure out how to deal with the changed circumstances they find themselves in, naturally occur. I don’t have action scenes unless there’s a plot point to be made, one that usually drives the story in a new direction. So, as an author, you just jump off from there.
What is it about paranormal that you love the most? And what is your favorite creature to play with (write)?
I like fantasy because it offers so much scope for the imagination. Which is why, I suppose, that my favorite characters are usually the new ones, some type of creature I find in my research that I hadn’t heard about, or hadn’t had a chance to write about, before. But I also love giving a new twist to old standbys, like my heroines: a pythia with time-traveling abilities and a dhampir with a serious split personality. They’re just fun!
What are you working on next?
The fourth Dorina Basarab novel. It’s tentatively titled Shadow’s Bane and will probably have been turned in by the time you post this.
Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing with us today and can’t wait for everyone to read RIDE THE STORM!
Thank you for having me. 😉
