So excited to have Ilona Andrews here today to talk about the last (maybe?) Hidden Legacy novel, WILDFIRE, out July 25! Definitely one of our favorite books/series of the year.
How would you say Nevada has grown from the beginning of the series and what is your favorite thing about her?
She is much more confident in herself and her abilities. Also, she had some preconceived notions about Primes, a very “us and them” mentality until she became one of them. As a coping mechanism, she rarely took any real risks in her personal life. She frequently goes to great lengths for her clients, but there was always a separation between the family and the rest of the world. I love that she has an extended family she loves and that loves her. We, Ilona and I, have both been on our own from a very young age, so that part of the book is a little bit of wish fulfillment on our part.
What is the key to writing a good action scene?
It has to make sense and you have to be able to picture it in your head as you read it. The main character can’t be shooting precision-shooting with a gun in each hand while leaping through the air dramatically, John Woo style, while also cutting the bad guy’s head off with a sword. I know we have magic, but we try to make the mundane bits as realistic as we can. We actually walk through the fight scenes ourselves, sometimes with the children as stand-ins. Usually a wooden spoon or yard stick makes a handy substitute sword or knife.
Can we expect any other books from the Hidden Legacy universe?
That is a question best directed toward our editor, Erika Tsang at Avon. We would like to write more of the Nevada & Rogan story, maybe even put her siblings and cousins in, but as of now, WILDFIRE is our last contracted novel for the series. Maybe we can self-pub it like the Innkeeper series. It really depends on how well the last book does, and if there is a demand for more stories in the Hidden Legacy universe.
We love all your female protagonists, they really come to life from the page, what helps you put together their character and personalities?
We try to have women who are self-sufficient. Some of them maybe more physical like Kate from Kate Daniels series, some are more reserved and rule-conscious like Dina from the Innkeeper Chronicles, but we want to write women who are competent at what they do or trying their hardest to become competent. We want them to have a solid moral compass, a set of ethics that dictates what they will and will not do. Sometimes their priorities are dictated by friends and families, at others by professional obligations, but all of our heroines step up to the plate and when life pushes them, they push back.
Can’t wait for everyone to read this one and if there’s a chance for more we’ll be jumping on it for sure. Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Just when Nevada Baylor has finally come to accept the depths of her magical powers, she also realizes she’s fallen in love. Connor “Mad” Rogan is in many ways her equal when it comes to magic, but she’s completely out of her elements when it comes to her feelings for him. To make matters more complicated, an old flame comes back into Rogan’s life…
Rogan knows there’s nothing between him and his ex-fiance, Rynda Sherwood. But as Nevada begins to learn more about her past, her power, and her potential future, he knows she will be faced with choices she never dreamed of and the promise of a life spent without him.
As Nevada and Rogan race to discover the whereabouts of Rynda’s kidnapped husband and are forced to confront Nevada’s grandmother, who may or may not have evil motives, these two people must decide if they can trust in each other or allow everything to go up in smoke.
