Welcome to Under the Covers, Amy! We’re excited to talk to you about your new series, the Lords of the Highlands. What can you tell us about this series? What can readers expect and where did the inspiration come from?
Hi everyone, and thank you for inviting me to the Under the Covers blog today! I am so excited for the launch of the Lords of the Highlands series with book one, THE HIGHLAND DUKE! These novels take place in the early 18th century with the buildup of the first Jacobite uprising. They are about the powerful Highland men who supported the right of the Stuart succession, men and women who were willing to put their lives on the line for the cause.
Tell us more about Akira Ayres, the heroine of the book.
I loved writing Akira’s character. She is of Romney descent with black hair and stunning blue eyes. Things aren’t easy for the Ayres, as the townsfolk are suspicious of Gypsy kin. To support her family, she learned the healing arts from her invalid mother. Born poor, Akira never knew her father and she has three younger sisters who rely on her income.
What is about the chemistry between Akira and Geordie that you love the most?
With this couple I like their instant attraction, yet their refusal to recognize it. They are worlds apart in social stature, and well aware there is no possible way a relationship would end well. But, throughout the book, each character puts his or her life on the line for the other.
If you had to describe Geordie in three words, what would they be?
Survivor, confident, powerful
What is your favorite thing about writing about Highlanders?
I love to write about the raw and rugged nature of the times. People had no choice but to live their lives with guts and perseverance, finding passion along the way.
What would you say was the biggest obstacle you encountered while writing this book? How did you overcome it?
It was difficult to bring two people together who, under most circumstances, would never even meet. I had to find a way to bring them together and then create a believable, action-packed love story. The characters made it happen, though. They have a way of getting what they want!
When you first started your writing career, who were your literary inspirations and why?
When I first started writing (loooong before I was published), my inspirations were Wilbur Smith and Tom Clancy. When I started writing again in 2010, I would say I’ve been influenced by Elizabeth Lowell, Monica McCarty and Maya Banks’ Scottish books.
Do you have a favorite all-time highlander hero in a book and why?
Boy, that’s a hard one, because I end up falling in love with all my heroes. If I had to choose, I’d say Callum MacLeod in Captured by the Pirate Laird is my favorite because he was my first Scottish hero. He had it all, an overbearing pirate with a deep sense of clan loyalty and honor.
Who wouldn’t fall in love with rugged warrior, who only has eyes for you, would protect you with his life, and speaks with a deep, lilting Scottish burr?
What three things you can’t leave home without?
My purse, my Chihuahua and a good book!
What’s next for you?
On June 27th, THE HIGHLAND COMMANDER will be released about the Marquis of Tullibardine and Lady Magdalen Keith:
She cannot resist the man behind the mask . . .
As the illegitimate daughter of a Scottish earl, Lady Magdalen Keith is not one to partake in lavish balls or other frivolities. Yet at her father’s urging, she agrees to dance with the battle-weary officers at this year’s holiday masquerade. It’s practically her civic duty! But when one such officer—whose dashing good looks cannot be disguised by a mere mask—sweeps her off her feet and into his arms, the innocent lass can’t help herself. Her lips are his for the taking.
But will he betray his country for a kiss?
Navy lieutenant Aiden Murray has spent too many months at sea to be immune to the charms of this lovely beauty. Even after he returns to his ship, she lives in his dreams. But when he discovers Maddie’s true identity—and learns that her father is accused of treason—will the brawny Scot risk his life to follow his heart?
