It Started as a Top Ten….Appreciating the Underappreciated

Well, just like it states in the title…this started out as a Top Ten, we were going to share with you the ten books we love that we feel have been overlooked and underappreciated. Those books that despite having read and fallen in love with, no one else has either a) heard of the book you’re talking about or b) given it the loving fanfare it deserves. We were going to rectify the situation and shine a spotlight on these books and encourage you to give them a try and spread the word. Looking back, we were so naive…10 books? How could we limit ourselves to 10 books? So instead, after agonising over it, we are going to highlight a couple of them, and then point you in the direction of the rest.

Street Magic
Black London #1
Caitlin Kittredge

Genre: Urban Fantasy
For fans ofDownside Ghosts by Stacia Kane, anyone who loves dark urban fantasy

I love this series, it’s a beautifully written  dark and twisted Urban Fantasy, full of magic and mayhem. As for the main characters…imagine a Spike from Buffy only with more jagged edges then a broken bottle and teeny tiny addiction to drugs. This is a series that you don’t often see it mentioned, which is a travesty as it is one of my favourites, so If you haven’t tried this series out then please take a chance and pick it up.

Against the Dark
The Associates #1
by Carolyn Crane

Genre: Romantic Suspense
For fans of…the slightly off-kilter

I am not normally a fan of Romantic Suspense I never find that many that I enjoy, atleast that was the case until Crane brought our her Associates series. I love the way she approaches things, it’s always off centre, quirky and not entirely unexpected and I love it. I know whenever I pick up one her books I am going to see something from a slightly from a different perspective…like an undercover agent whose superpower is logistics or linguistics.

Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold
Eyes of Silver, Eyes of Gold #1
by Ellen O’Connell

Genre: Historical Romance
For fans of…romance, everyone should read this book.

I have reread this book soooo many times. I know the cover is awful, really really awful. But please don’t let that put you off, as the old adage says; you can’t judge a book by its cover. Because beneath that the cheap photoshopped job, is a beautiful tale of courage in adversity, forbidden love, friendship and family. It is one of my all time favourite reads. So shoo, go read it!

So those were the books we wanted to highlight…but like I said, it doesn’t stop there, there are so many fantastic books out there that don’t get the attention they deserve, so we thought we would share all the ones we came up with! So please take a look and if you see something you may like we demand you give it a go!

These are our underappreciated reads, what are yours?

I have to second the DOUBLE DOWN, ONE RECKLESS SUMMER, and BLOOD BOUND. All great reads!

Kathleen Bylsma

Pretty good selection there…I esp agree with your lead off…Kittridge!

If you like shifters, one of my favorite series is Eileen Wilks’ World of the Lupi series. I never see it mentioned much, but it’s great. Definitely have to start from the beginning though. You can’t pick this one up in the middle. There are 13 books so far.

You have some great books in your picks…If I had to pick one that’s not listed it would be DB Reynolds Vampires in America series. She has had me hooked since I first read Raphael.

Thanks! I was just looking for something to read and I have this one on my kindle.

Love this!!! And I love the comments. Thanks for the recommendations!

Great list and great recommendations. I’ve seen a few of these books and have one on my TBR “Dark Currents.”

I loved dark currents, dark magic and blade song. I agree about eileen wilks and would add cate tiernan’s immortal beloved series and balefire series along with amanda m lee.

Book Marking this list! Thank you !

I have quite a few of these, thanks for the reminder to read them and get the ones I don’t have!

Ooh I like dark urban fantasy, so that first one sounds great! And I have Wicked as They Come, so maybe I’ll finally get to that one this year 🙂

Well if it makes you feel better, I’ve read about half of those and was aware of three more with two of those on the list to eventually read. 🙂

I do love seeing you giving some love to the underappreciated books. I love it when we get author review quests at the blog because I’ve encountered some of my most amazing reads that way when I otherwise wouldn’t have heard of the books. The Carrie Lofty one you have listed was one of those for me.

What a great and helpful idea for your readers! Thank you.

I love the Kit Colbana series by JC Daniels and Making Faces by Amy Harmon. Some other series that I think are underappreciated are Beyond Series by Kit Rocha, Charlotte Stein books (erotic), Cronins Key series by NR Walker (M/M vampires), Susan Fanetti books (MC and Viking series) and House of Pleasure series by Kate Pearce (historical erotic).

Joanna M

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m always hesitant to try new authors but your recommendation was all I needed to add them to my TBR.
I love the Deadly Ops series by Katie Reus (romantic suspense) and Lynn Barron’s historical romance.
