Ahhh 2016, honestly it’s been a little bit of a humdrum year full of far too many mediocre reads. However, that has just made that books that I have loved this year stand out all the more. And there have been some fantastic reads that stand out, fingers crossed for some more great books in 2017!
When reflecting on what was my most enjoyable read of 2016 was, my mind immediatly settles on the Kate Daniels series. With each book the characters grow and the relationships deepen and I just can’t get enough of it. Ilona Andrews really demonstrates Urban Fantasy at it’s best with this series, it’s a great balance between excitement, adventure, love, friendship and world building. If you haven’t tried this series than what are you waiting for?
I can’t believe I didn’t read this when it first came out! I don’t even know what made me pick it up…call it fate, call it the universe, but whatever it was I am very grateful. I. Loved. It. This is a romantic fantasy book with focus on the romance although there was some fantasy world building. But it was about the two main characters who fall into friendship which develops in to more despite their many many differences. They are both different races that consider the other race ugly and alien…yet love overcomes. If you want to read a romance which is little different from the usual, pick this up!
It was a good year for fantasy romance! I dont’ read that many but the ones I have read have really stood out. A Promise of Fire is a fantastic start to the Kingmaker Chronicles, once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. Romance and adventure, with a feisty heroine and a sexy hero and his band of merry men. This book has a bit more action than Radiance which is raved about in mt ‘Best New To Me’ category, but it is still very much a romance, I was reading to see when the main characters would finally get jiggy. I can’t wait to read the next in the series, it’s definitly a series to keep your eye on.
Mary is one of my all time favourite heroines, so knowing I was getting another book this year with her as the main character was very exciting. And then reading Blood Vow where she was also featured very prominently was an unexpected gift. She first appears in the Black Dagger Brotherhood early on in book #2 Lover Eternal and she made a big impression. Mary may not know how to fight, but she’s a warrior. Her resilience, her empathy, her strong-as-steel inner strength can only be admired. I adore her and I understand why her hellren feels the same way.
Once you have read one sexy alpha male…you’ve kind of read them all. I know, I know put the pitchforks down, that statement may undermine the whole of the romance genre but I, despite the essential sameness, still enjoy an alpha male. But when a different kind of hero comes along it immediatly grabs and holds my attention. Enter Cletus Winston. I feel like he’s a modern day hillbilly Moriarty… if Moriarty had chosen to use his collosal brain for good. Ofcourse Cletus also has the added bonus of having a beautiful body and a stupendous beard. What more could a gal want?
The Beast by J.R. Ward
Black Dagger Brotherhood #14
‘ Nuff said.
First off, I’m not a huge fan of Kenyon as it is, but I have a few exceptions one of them being the League series. Sci-fi romance is my thing; I adore it, especially this series. But Born of Legend. What a dud. I was so inexcusably bored. It was yet another book where Kenyon writes a ridculously tortured hero, so tortured and angsty in fact that I stop feeling sorry for him and instead find myself eyerolling uncontrollably – it’s like something from The Exorcist. It took me months to read this book when the earlier books took me hours, for me the shine has finally come off Kenyon, I just can’t bare to torture myself by reading another one of her books.
This series isn’t strictly a romance, it’s more of an Urban Fantasy and Meg and Simon aren’t the traditional couple. And yet…I love them together, yes it’s a kind of slow moving romance, so much so that it’s hard to call it romance. More like they are already a couple and everyone is just waiting for them to realise it. Each book there is more progress and I eagerly anticipate every little move they make.
I don’t much read erotic romance and I don’t much read New Adult either and yet Charlotte Stein has somehow managed to create a series that is both and hook me right in. This book is knicker-meltingly, bucket-of-ice-needing hot. With a mixture of top notch dirty talk and some added elements of danger it’s definietly the sexiest book I have read in 2016.
Penny Reid, how I love thee, let me count the ways! Firstly there was your fantastic new installment of the Knitting in the City series…which was followed by your excellent collaboration with another UTC favourite L.H. Cosway. And then, the real clincher Beard Science featuring my Hero of the Year Cletus Winston, him of the best sausage in Tennessee and razor sharp intellect. Every single offering from Reid has been top notch and I can’t wait for 2017 to see what she has store in for me!
Hats off for Penny Reid!

Annnnnd I will stop myself there, before I start waxing lyrical about my love of historical romance and fantasy as well; no one needs to know about my elf fantasies. As you can tell, I adore and day dream about most romance genres, and my three big loves are 1) reading about romance 2) writing about romance and 3) talking about romance with my gals. Which, is why I love Under the Covers so much, I get all my bookish needs satisfied and don’t get judged when I talk about my favourite characters like they are real people. Which they are right?
