Interview with Alexandra Ivy

Welcome back to Under the Covers, Alexandra! We’re so happy to have you chat with us today. This December you have several new books out. Let’s talk about your Guardians of Eternity series first. For readers who are new to this series, how would you describe this series?

I always tell readers that the Guardians began out of my love for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  I’d never seen such a fun combination of action, adventure, romance and family dysfunction.  I was hooked and I wanted to capture the same atmosphere in my books, but I like concentrate on the challenges of immortal beings attempting to adjust to the modern world.

TAKEN BY DARKNESS and WHERE DARKNESS LIVES are both novellas. What would you say is your favorite thing about writing novellas? What do you find most difficult about them?

My favorite thing about anthologies is the break-neck speed of them.  I usually try to make sure my couple have some previous history so I don’t have to waste time on the ‘getting to know’ phase, and I make it as antagonistic as possible.  I want the sparks flying from the first page.  The most difficult part is the inability to add in any secondary characters or to really flesh out a backstory.

For fans of the series, what can they expect from these novellas?

These are fast-moving, filled with lots of action and of course plenty of romance.  They’re set in the Guardians of Eternity world so you’ll get to see some of your favorite characters, but they’re stand-alone books so you can read them without having read the other books in the series.

What would you say is your favorite thing about writing Paranormal Romance?

I love the fact that I can put my own twist on favorite mystical characters.  We all know what a vampire or werewolf should be, but each writer has the ability to add to the lore and to make it distinctly their own.  It’s a place of fantasy, which all good books should be 😉

KILL WITHOUT SHAME is the second book in your ARES Security series. How does this series differ from your other work?

The series is a straight romantic suspense without any paranormal elements, although the first book KILL WITHOUT MERCY did have a main character who had visions of murders.  But in many ways, the writing and the ‘vibe’ of the books are the same.  Lots of danger, adventure, and romance with a splash of humor mixed in.

If you had to summarize this book in a tweet (140 characters or less) what would it be?

When Lucas discovers a dead man clutching a picture of Mia, his protective instincts kick in. He’ll Kill Without Shame to protect her.

How do you tend to celebrate your release day?

I’ve usually spent so much time doing promo leading up to the release day that I collapse when it’s finally here lol.  I’ll be doing a big giveaway on facebook, but other than that, I’ll probably retreat to my office and have a nice glass of wine.

The new year is almost here!  What can we expect from you in 2017?

I’m hoping to slow down a little this year.  I’ll be doing a larger suspense novel PRETEND YOU’RE SAFE that will come out August 27th, as well as more Bayou Heat that I write with Laura Wright.  I’m also hoping to get one new Dragons of Eternity book out, but I don’t have a date yet.

Thank you so much for sharing with us today!

Thanks so much for inviting me!!

About Alexandra Ivy

I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.
