Welcome back to Under the Covers Book Blog, Melissa! I am thrilled to be able to talk to you about your newest book TRU BLUE. Now this story is a little bit different for you. Can you tell us what makes TRU BLUE unique from all the other stories you’ve written?
Great to be back at UTC, always love stopping by to chat! Oh, TRU BLUE! For one thing, Tru’s story is 100% a standalone romance. You will meet a few secondary characters that have been introduced in prior releases (River of Love) and the book takes place within the world of Peaceful Harbor, but Truman and Gemma, and some of their friends, are brand new characters, so you can read and enjoy without having to have read any of my other series/releases.
The biggest thing you will notice is that Tru Blue is gritty, and it’s a little darker than my typical romances, but it’s written in the same raw, passionate voice that readers have come to love, and you will still find my strong character connections and a powerful love story at the center. I absolutely loved writing this book.
Can you tell us a bit about Truman Gritt? What is it about his character that resonates with you?
Truman has a HUGE heart. He will do anything (and he has) to protect those that he loves the most, even if he gets bitten on the ass for trying to do the right thing. He loves with everything he has, and he is loyal to a fault. He puts it all on the line when he wants something, and he never takes what isn’t given. But he’s also a bit damaged and scarred, and he’s very, very real. He is a total alpha, but he’s also patient and kind and just truly a loveable character. I hope your readers love him as much as I do.
Who is Gemma Wright? What would you say is a quality that every heroine should have?
Gemma >sigh<. She’s pushy and sweet and so many things all in one down-to-earth woman despite her sheltered and privileged upbringing. She just wants to be loved and accepted, and I guess we all do when it comes right down to it. Truman comes into her life at just the right time. He makes her question her choices, shows her what true love really is, and he pushes her to question what she really wants out of life.
I write heroine’s who are real, who I’d want to hang out and drink a coffee with. Heroine’s who take chances and when they fall in love, they fall with every single piece of their heart! I adore Gemma, and she’s not without flaws, or what she perceives as her own amount of damage. I hope readers adore her.
What is the single best indie pub tip you can give to an aspiring author?
Keep writing! Just keep writing! Don’t obsess over the small things like newsletter subscribers, and facebook likes, those will eventually build, but if you have nothing for readers to sink their teeth into, then all of that is inconsequential. Keep writing! When you finish one, polish it until it shines. Hire editors, proofreaders, and professional cover artists. Then start the next, and the next and so on. Just keep writing! All the rest will fall into place!
If we went through your purse right this moment, what would we find?
Um. Nothing, because I don’t carry oneJ I keep everything in a special wallet for my phone. Credit cards, cash (sometimes) and car insurance cards. That’s it. I’m pretty much of a utilitarian. But I’m a bag whore, too. I own about 50+ hippie bags, but I only use them when I go to the Cape, and then, only when I’m shopping because I hate carrying shopping bags, so I stuff everything I buy into them.
If you could be best friends with any fictional character, who would it be and why?
That’s so hard, because I love ALL of my characters! But probably one of the girls from my Seaside Summers series because they’re trickers, they love to skinny dip (chunky dunk), and eat cookie dough with their wine (and they live on Cape Cod!).
What can we expect next from Melissa Foster?
Next up is SEASIDE WHISPERS (Seaside Summers Series) releasing late November 30, then the Bad Boys After Dark series continues with DYLAN in December. I am working on a few new series that I have planned for next year, including Bear Whiskey’s love story, WILD WHISKEY NIGHTS (currently up for pre-order) and my Seaside Summers spin off, Bayside Summers. Bear is a supporting character in Tru Blue, and my early readers have been begging for his story. I’m excited to write it! The other new books/series have not been announced yet, but fun surprises are in store for my readers! The Bradens at Peaceful Harbor, the Ryders, and Bad Boys After Dark will continue into 2017.
