“It had so many elements that should’ve hit it off the park and it didn’t follow through with execution for me.”
~ Under the Covers
I hate not connecting with books. Especially ones that I am really hoping they’ll be my discovery of a new author to love and follow. I had very high expectations for this book because I’ve seen some of my favorite authors and readers talking about this author and raving in their reviews so I just thought this would be my jam. The cover helped for sure too. And to be honest, it’s not that it started off bad. I just don’t think this style is quite for me.
I found the writing a bit choppy and disjointed. This was one of the reasons I kept getting pulled out from the story, my brain over-analyzing the writing constantly and I was never fully IN the story. In the end this made me not connect with the characters. I’m not sure if it would’ve been different otherwise because this isn’t a very complicated love story, but at least I felt that had the writing not been so choppy for me I might’ve enjoyed it more. Maybe this is just me, most people loved it!
I am all over the theme of the lumberjack and John Day wears it well. The beard, the clothes, the setting AND the job description. He was very cute and adorable. He’s also the narrator of this story and I enjoyed that because I preferred his character over the heroine. She seemed quite cold to me. And yes, that could be because we are seeing her through John’s eyes, but I was happy with the POV. He has a great sense of humor, and I loved that this started off as a friends first story. Both John and Diane have their own issues to get over from their previous relationships so it was good they had some time before jumping into being together.
But while I can enjoy simple and slow stories at times, and I know I’m also in the minority here with this one, I found myself a bit bored reading this. It had so many elements that should’ve hit it off the park and it didn’t follow through with execution for me. Gahhh! That’s upsetting. I’m not sure if I should continue and give this series another try or leave it at that. I already have book 2, but honestly I’m scared and I really don’t like writing bad reviews! Will think it over.
