Welcome to Under the Covers, Kate! For readers who may be new to your books, could you please tell us about the Hot in Chicago series first?
The Hot in Chicago series is about the Dempseys, a family of foster siblings who have all followed in the footsteps of their legendary firefighter foster father, Sean Dempsey, and live by the lessons he taught them: fire is stronger than blood and defend the people you love to the last ember. Wyatt, Luke, Beck, Alexandra, and Gage all work at Engine Co. 6 in Chicago, and throughout the series find their happily-ever-afters.
SPARKING THE FIRE is the third book in the series. What was your favorite part of writing Molly and Wyatt’s story?
Wyatt! It was so much fun to get inside his head. I tend to write very verbal heroes who are quip masters and wear their emotions on their sleeves. But Wyatt has always been the quiet Dempsey, the serious guy who stays in the background. Putting him with a famous Hollywood actress who lives her life in the limelight seemed like a romance match made in Heaven.
How would you describe Wyatt in 3 words? How about Molly?
Wyatt: Brooding, loyal, bearded.
Molly: Burned, brave, determined.
Why did you decide to set this series in the Windy City?
I live in Chicago so it seemed like a natural fit. Plus I’m a big fan of big city-set romances where you can use real places, streets, and landmarks as a backdrop. Chicago is perfect for romance.
Do you have a favorite scene from this book?
Wyatt and Molly are trying to keep their relationship on the down low and decide to use the ’69 Camaro that Wyatt is restoring as a hook-up location. Here’s a brief excerpt:
“Wyatt, I think you’re missing the point of the illicit affair. It’s supposed to be comprised of desperate quickies wherever we can find a flat surface. In waiting for it to be perfect, we are missing out on all the amazing, hot sex we should be having!”
He frowned at her outburst.
Must she do everything herself? She sidestepped him and opened the back door of the Camaro. “Like in here.”
“You want to do it in the Camaro?”
“You want to have sex in the backseat of my ’69 Camaro?”
Sheesh, guys were so weird about their stupid cars.
“Maybe we could lay down a blanket or something.”
He kissed the ever-loving stuffing out of her. “I must have been a saint in a previous life.” Switching their positions, he maneuvered his big body into the backseat and flipped on the car’s dome light. “Get out of my dreams and into my car.”
Billy Ocean? Oh boy.

I love second chance romances! What is it about this trope that appealed to you to write it?
I love them too! I think it’s the chance of one more shot at getting it right. No matter how much we screw up, no matter how lost it all seems, there’s always hope.
If you had to summarize this book in a tweet (140 characters or less) what would you say?
