In the second installment to the Bourbon Kings series, J.R. Ward delivers a page-turning read with THE ANGELS’ SHARE. If you thought the first book was packed with dark secrets and even darker characters, be prepared for more jaw-dropping surprises that will surely make your head spin. Ward flawlessly executes each twist and turn, resulting in a gripping read that will keep you hooked.
Ward utilizes multiple POVs in this book, just like she does with her BDB series. There are plenty of moments between Lane and Lizzie as she further deepens their connection and love. We get more updates on Gin and the sad situation she is now in. While I didn’t immediately fall in love with her in the first book, I am growing to like her more and more now.
But I think for me the star of the book is Edward. Edward is the one Bradford that we don’t really know much about. Shrouded in secrecy all the time, we don’t really know what is going on in his head most of the time and I find that fascinating about his character. He’s my favorite character of the series, by far.
Again, Ward focuses on the family drama, keeping the romance dialed to a simmer. It’s still effective though and I actually liked that it wasn’t played up too much. There’s already so much going on that I think it would’ve been unbalanced otherwise.
For me the writing is what makes this book so good. Ward hit a wave with this book. It flows so eloquently and when it’s time for a bomb to drop, it’s done so perfectly that you don’t often expect until it happens. Even if you aren’t a fan of soap operas or the South, you can’t deny that the story just keeps getting juicier with each book.
I would highly suggest reading the first book before this one, and be prepared for some shocking twists! The South has never been so scandalous!
