“Delving into Joe’s psyche was so interesting while completely disturbing.  I couldn’t look away, but I desperately wanted to.”
~ Under the Covers

Warning: This is NOT a love story, nor does it have a happy ending!

I’ve had this book (and the sequel) on my TBR for a long time.  I was scared to pick it up, though, because I didn’t want to start freaking out at the real possibility this could easily happen.  But I finally put my big girl panties on and took a dive in.  I wasn’t even 10% in and the hair on the back of my neck was standing up.  Yeah, spooked.

YOU is told from the POV of a stalker.  Joe Goldberg is not right in the head and you can tell that from the very beginning as his obsession with Guinevere Beck starts as soon as he spots her browsing the books at his bookstore in NYC.  A simple thing as her paying for her books with her credit card (and an open social media life) allows him to dig his way into her life.

I think what stand out about this book is how it’s written.  I haven’t quite read something like this before and that original take on a thriller is what kept me glued to the pages (or the audiobook more accurately).  Delving into Joe’s psyche was so interesting while completely disturbing.  I couldn’t look away, but I desperately wanted to.  His view of events was so skewed it was quite unbelievable to see.  And the deeper he got into his quest for having Beck, the creepier things got.  This wasn’t necessarily a scary book, but it has the creep level turned up to the max.  The way it’s written helps push that along, as this reads like Joe’s diary entries in his “Book of Beck”.

The ending was a bit predictable, even as I was hoping some twist would pop out of nowhere.  But now knowing there’s a second book, it makes sense why the author decided to go for that.  I’ll definitely be picking up the next one to see what will come of Joe.  Creeper extraordinaire.

If you’re looking for something completely different that will leave you a bit scared and questioning every stranger you run into out in the world, then YOU is the one you should pick up.  I think it’s perfect pool side reading material!

I just finished listening to this one, too, and I was so creeped out by it! I’ve been trying to write my review, and I just feel like I’m not adequately getting the ick factor across.

Right? There is something so creepy about it. I was kind of disturbed about feeling bad for Joe at times!

Thanks for the warning

Thanks for the review, I think I will avoid. Doesn’t sound like my type of book.

I read this a few months ago…and I congratulate you for being able to write a review! I tried and tried to get my feelings across but I … Couldn’t. But you managed, so congrats!! I’m so glad you loved it, too 🙂

I have this on my audio list. I’m saving it for when I’m in the mood for something on the dark side.
