“Handeland is able to incorporate different aspects to this story that I have never seen done before in fiction.”
~ Under the Covers
HEAT OF THE MOMENT is the second book in the Sisters of the Craft series by Lori Handeland, but it’s my first book I’ve read from this author. I’ve had this series sitting on my bookshelf for a while and I decided to try it out on a whim. I was surprised that I was able to jump right in without having read the first book in the series, which for me, is a total win.
More surprisingly is the fact that Handeland is able to incorporate different aspects to this story that I have never seen done before in fiction. Our heroine, Becca, has a very special ability involving animals. She can hear their voices and as a veterinarian, that helps her out a lot. The hero, Owen, has a military trained dog that is able to understand German commands. As I mentioned, this isn’t something I’ve ever read before so I was immediately transfixed by this concept.
While the paranormal aspect of the book is very much there, I would say that Handeland creates a good balance between the paranormal and the real-life conflict happening between Owen and Becca. They were once something a long time ago, and as we explore the past that neither one of them want to revisit, we get to understand a lot more about the characters apart from their supernatural abilities and I really liked seeing that.
I was also really surprised about the humor in this book. There are some really fun moments and one-liners that made me smile. By the cover and blurb of the book, I thought it would be a very dark book, but it actually has a nice balance. I’ll definitely be looking into reading more of Lori’s books in the future.

When it comes to books I’m pretty adventurous. I read everything from Paranormal Romance to Urban Fantasy, New Adult, BDSM, LGBT fiction, Cozy Mysteries and even YA. If it’s got the littlest trace of romance in it, then I’ll probably read it. That being said, my all-time favorite authors are J.R. Ward and Karen Marie Moning.
When I’m not submerged in a good book, you can find me musing about makeup and planners or dreaming about Kpop boys and beaches. Until then, check out my reviews and let’s talk books!
