Welcome to Under the Covers, Melissa! Since this is your first time here, let’s get to know you a little bit better. Tell us three interesting things about yourself that readers wouldn’t know about you.
Hi Annie! I’m thrilled to be here and to chat with you J Let’s see… I’m such an open book, there probably isn’t much readers don’t already know, but here goes! I am very protective of my hero and heroines voices, meaning I don’t like to try and guide them. I like to saturate myself in everything H/H for each one, which means not reading romance while I’m writing. This makes it hard to get my fill of romance, since I write 7 days a week, but that’s what summer breaks are for! I am a little like Leanna from Read, Write, Love, in that I like messes. I can’t write with a neat desk. It stifles me. Lastly, my very favorite moment of real-life kisses is the few seconds before, when your heart pounds and your body is aware of all the spots where you and your lover touch, and all you can think about is how much you want that kiss. Even after a hundred years with my hubby, that’s still my favorite moment.
I’m so excited about the Bad Boys After Dark series. Mick is the hero of the first book. What can you tell us about Mick?
Oh, Mick! He’s so deliciously HOT! He’s one of my most favorite heroes because not only is he suave and successful, but he’s hard and a master at everything he does—and I mean everything. He’s smart and sinful, but he’s also empathetic and there’s darkness and heartache in his past that I won’t reveal here (sorry, no spoilers). It takes a lot for him to not only share that with his forever love, but to deal with it and move past it. His desire to get there, to make that final push, surprises him and honestly, it surprised me, too. I wasn’t sure he’d get there J He’s alpha, he’s brooding, he’s daring, but he’s so much more. I hope readers love him!
PS: What reader who haven’t read my work yet don’t know, is that every Melissa Foster book in the spicy Love and Bloom series is five flames HOT.
What makes this series different from what you’ve written before?
I originally pegged the After Dark series (Wild Boys After Dark, Bad Boys After Dark, and Nice Girls After Dark) as being raunchier than my other contemporary romances, such as the Bradens, but honestly, other than a little language, they’re pretty close. These stories are a bit grittier because they’re faster paced and get into the sexier scenes pretty quickly, and there are no holes barred (um, pun intended!) in physicality or in language. Expect dirty talk, lots of dirty talk…
Please describe the other Bad Boys with one word:
Carson: Careful (but don’t let that fool you)
You are able to crank out the books so quickly while still maintaining such amazing quality. What are your top tips to continually producing well-written books?
The only reason my books come out quickly is that I write very fast, between 5000-10,000 words/day. I’m a total writeaholic (no 12-step program for me, thank you very much), but I refuse to skimp on story or quality. I have to fall madly, deeply, passionately in love with my hero and heroine. If I don’t, my reader’s won’t. For that reason, I write and rewrite until I feel them breathing. If I don’t have a fresh story that I haven’t written before, I won’t write the book. It’s a rule of mine, not to rehash old stories. I also rely heavily on my developmental editor to insure the stories are riveting and complete. She’s my “readers’ eyes” and we’ve worked so closely for so many years, we make a great team. In addition, I work with a professional copy editor and I now use five proofreaders to insure my books are top quality when they hit the shelves.
What’s next for Melissa Foster?
So much! In addition to fun things, like new paperback covers for my Love in Bloom series, I have a new standalone romance coming out, TRU BLUE. Even though every single book I write can be read as a standalone romance, I wanted to branch out of my series books and give readers who haven’t yet read my work something new to delve into. TRU BLUE is a darker romance than my typical contemporary romance books, because his past is darker, but the story contains the same raw, passionate voice my readers love. Next year I have a new series coming out called the Montgomery Girls that I’m also super excited about. I’ve given you a brief description of each of these new endeavors below:
TRU BLUE —He wears the skin of a killer, and bares the heart of a lover.
There’s nothing Truman Gritt won’t do to protect his family—Including spending years in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. When he’s finally released, the life he knew has is turned upside down by his mother’s overdose, and Truman steps in to raise the children she’s left behind. Truman’s hard, he’s secretive, and he’s trying to save a brother who’s even more broken than he is. He’s never needed help in his life, and when beautiful Gemma Wright tries to step in, she’s everything he’s not, and he’s less than accepting. But Gemma has a way of slithering into people’s lives and eventually she pierces through his ironclad heart. When Truman’s dark past collides with his future, he’ll face his toughest decision yet.
MONTGOMERY GIRLS—If you love the Bradens wait until you meet the smart, sassy, and super sexy Montgomery Girls!
Montgomery Girls is a big family romance series that’s fun, sexy, and always gives readers a happily ever after. These stories are neither overtly sweet nor darkly erotic. Sex is graphic and sensual, but always written between loving couples, with an emotionally raw and compelling voice, and never for shock value. Our heroes and heroines don’t cheat, though they’re only human, so they may tell little white lies from time to time. Romance and family always come first, and loyalties run deep, but these stories will deal with real life issues that readers can relate to.
The Montgomery girls sure as heck aren’t your typical sweet southern heroines. They’re strong, smart, sassy, and like any southern girl worth her salt, they can take you to your knees with one glance, or a single sugar coated sentence. Use your imagination, because these girls use their sweet-talking, sharp-tongued powers for good and wicked.
Each book can be read as a stand alone novel, or for more enjoyment, read in series order and follow engagements, weddings, births, and fantastically fun mishaps.
