Interview with Elle Kennedy

Welcome back to Under the Covers, Elle! We’re excited about the release of ADDICTED, the second book in the Outlaws series. Now can you tell us a bit about the series for the new readers who haven’t had a chance to read book one yet?

The Outlaws series is a dystopian romance – it takes place in an alternate reality where there has been a catastrophic world war. This is also probably my “dirtiest” series to date.

How would you describe Lennox’s character?

Lennox is pretty level-headed. He’s fiercely protective of those close to him, but he’s also reluctant to let people get too close knowing what a perilous life they’re living. He’s had to say goodbye to a lot of friends and loved ones already, and he wants to avoid getting hurt again.

A bit of revenge comes into play with this novel. What was your favorite thing about incorporating that into a book about best friends?

I guess it’s the dynamic of besties that most of us can relate to. In so many ways we’re equals – it’s us against them, but sooner or later some event happens where one person will take a more dominant role feeling that they know better than the other. It’s sort of the battle we’ve all had to prove to our bestie we’re just as capable as them, even if it requires a bit of ‘Ha, I told you so’ or in this case ‘I love you, but payback’s a bitch’.  In the end, a good friendship always wins.

You’re quite known for writing steamy scenes, so what are some of your key ways to write those lava-hot sex scenes?

Specifically with this series, writing the scenes was very liberating. The characters are living their lives knowing that for them there could easily be no tomorrow. It allows a freedom of just having pleasure for the sake of pleasure, and no fear of fantasy being reality.

Have you or will you explore any topics in this book that you haven’t been able to before with other books?

Oddly enough, this book involved a bit of research into what you could almost call a “Zombie Apocalypse Plan”. Given the state of the world the outlaws are living in, you have to think about survival tactics – generators, food storage, job roles – everyone needs to pull their own weight, or have something useful to bring to the table.

What is your favorite thing about writing in this very different world as opposed to the contemporaries you are known for?

I guess the fact that there’s a lot less rules. When I’m writing my other series they’re all taking place in modern times – we know exactly how the world is divided and the technology we have, and we’re very quick to know if something exists, or how it’s done. In this world there’s a lot more room to be imaginative.

You have been more recently writing under the pen name Erin Watt, with Jen Frederick, and the second book in that series is coming soon.  What can readers expect from BROKEN PRINCE?

Without giving anything away, I’d say to expect a lot of what you got from Paper Princess: a roller-coaster of emotions with plot twists and turns. Some of your questions will be answered, but you’ll also be left with more questions…

What does your writing space looks like?  Feel free to add a visual.

Depends on where I’m working that day. I have an office with wall-to-wall bookshelves and a big fluffy chair I can write comfortably in. If it’s a nice day I’ll be on my deck trying not to stare longingly at my pool. More often than not, my writing space is being taken up by my attention-hungry dog.

How do you usually celebrate release day?

Honestly, release days make me nervous. I’m always super excited that my work is being released for others to experience, but it’s also very scary showing your work to the world. I usually try to take a quiet day for myself.

What are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on a few different projects! I’m wrapping up Midnight Target for my Killer Instincts Series, working with Jen on Twisted Palace for The Royals series, and Tucker’s book The Goal for the Off-Campus series. It’s shaping up to be a very busy summer!

As always, thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Thanks for having me!

Interesting concept…I like the idea of a world where the rules are being rewritten… it allows the author room for creativity with the readers along for the ride 🙂

Great interview! I love anything dystopian. Looking forward to this!

Great interview! Can’t wait to read Broken Prince and Twisted Palace
