Welcome back to Under the Covers, Mandy! We are thrilled to be able to talk to you today about AT ANY COST, the newest installment to the U.S. Marshals series. Now for readers who may be new to the series, could you please tell us a little bit about what the series is about?
The U.S. Marshals series features a new U.S. Marshal hero and a new heroine in each installment. With every new case, an alpha-male marshal finds himself going head-to-head with a feisty heroine who gives him a run for his money. There’s plenty of action, quick dialog, and smoldering sex scenes. I’ve had a lot of fun writing these books and I hope everyone has just as much fun reading them!
Our heroine, Olivia Gallagher, has a bit of a complicated past so I’m interested in your writing process and how you created the backstory for Livy’s character in particular. Was there anything about Livy that you found difficult to write?
My biggest challenge with writing Livy was trying to make her funny and quirky. People tell me I’m funny (I don’t see it), but I have a hard time writing funny. I hope I don’t let readers down with Livy’s quirkiness. As far as writing her backstory, my daughter was a ski racer when she was young so I used that as a basis for Livy’s experience as a junior-level racer. And since I used my hometown as the backdrop for the book, I didn’t have any trouble creating a small-town life for her.
I’m a big fan of U.S. Marshal Nick Brady. He’s a very driven man and I also really loved that he’s a dirty talker. What do you hope readers enjoy about Nick?
I actually based Nick’s character after a real-life U.S. Marshal. I’ve been fortunate enough to have consulted with someone from the U.S. Marshals office and he told me a few stories about this crazy marshal who’d go out in his spare time and hunt fugitives. He even handcuffed one to the bed of his little Toyota pickup once! I hope that readers enjoy Nick’s tenacity and stubbornness. The dirty talking is a huge plus, though. I love a hero with a filthy mouth!
The entire series has a prominent suspense thread lined throughout. What would you say is the key to maintaining the balance between the action and the romance?
I’m an action junkie! I love action and heist movies, anything with sword or gunfights, car chases, and high stakes. I think it’s important to break up the calm moments with action to keep the pacing of the book nice and fast. AT ANY COST is a little tamer in the action department but I tried to balance that out by providing tons of sexual tension.
What can you tell us about the next book in the series, LOCKED AND LOADED?
LOCKED AND LOADED is hands down my favorite book in the series so far. It stars Mason Decker, a marshal with an infamous past and U.S. Attorney Charlie Cahill. They’re trying to take down an emerging and very powerful crime syndicate and their asset is a charismatic diamond smuggler who manages to get them into all sorts of trouble. There’s more action in this book than previous installments of the series and I’ve got a huge crush on the characters. I can’t wait for September so readers can meet them!
If you’re not reading or writing, what would we most likely find you doing?
If it’s winter, I’m usually hiding out from the snow. The hubs and I spend a lot of time driving as far away from it as we can! In the summer, I like to stay close to home. We have a great lake and I’m always at the beach or in my kayak. I’m definitely a summer girl!
Let’s do some quick-fire questions to get to know you a little more!
What’s your favorite movie?
Shakespeare in Love. (I totally have a thing for Shakespeare)
Who is your favorite literary character?
He’s not a romance hero, but Derfel from Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles. Cornwell is by far my favorite historical fiction author and he writes protagonists who jump off the page.
Are you a morning person or night owl?
That’s a tough one! I’m more of a middle of the day person. LOL! I guess if I had to choose I’d say I’m a night owl. It takes me FOREVER to get going in the morning.
What’s your favorite way to wind down after a long work day?
The hubs is a seriously fantastic cook. My idea of dinner is a PB&J. His is a gourmet meal with an artistic presentation. My favorite way to wind down is to have him cook dinner. I don’t even mind doing the dishes!
Thanks so much for chatting with me today!
