“The romance between Addison and Jake is sweet and cute…”
~ Under the Covers

I loved the premise of this book because it comes elements that I love to read about and I can’t wait to see them all explored more in this series.  First off, a restaurant setting.  The heroine in this book, Addison, is co-owner of Seduction along with her best friends.  I love books set in a restaurant (the foodie in me!) and the bonds of friendship between the women that the author explores so well in this book are an added bonus.  With how different each of the women are, I know it’ll make for an interesting and varied series.

In LISTEN TO ME, Addison is an ex-model and falls for an ex-rock star who comes to sing at Seduction.  I love that both of them have left their crazy careers behind in a sense and are a bit more centered and mature now to be in the right frame of mind for a relationship.  The romance between Addison and Jake is sweet and cute throughout this book.

But there were some things that I didn’t enjoy as much, or that I think could’ve been stronger.  Mainly the backstory for both characters.  They both have their own demons that make them feel unworthy of being in a happy relationship, or thinking that they’ll just hurt the other person.  But the reason behind why and how they eventually overcome those issues was not as strong as I would’ve liked to see.

I do enjoy Kristen Proby’s writing style.  She tells this story with ease and makes you feel part of this group.  And while she’s weaving this sweet romance between the main characters, she’s also left me really curious for what the next book will bring.  Can’t wait to read it.

EXCERPT

Addison

It’s quiet in here now, and the silence is too loud. He’s staring down at his drink, his eyes a deep green in the low light of the bar. A crease forms between his eyebrows in a frown, and then he shakes his head, just a tiny bit. Jake sips his drink, and I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking.

              And I’m a woman, so I ask.

Because who ever heeded the whole, don’t ask the question if you don’t want the answer warning?

“What are you thinking?” I ask softly.

He chuckles and shakes his head.

              “You don’t want to know.”

              “I asked.”

He swivels in the stool, facing me, and rests his hand on the arm of my own stool, leaning into me, and it takes everything in me not to back away. His eyes lower to my lips.

I lick them, and watch his eyes dilate.

This is a very bad idea.

I swallow hard as he continues to watch my mouth.

“It’s quiet in here,” he says evenly.

              “I was thinking the same.”

“Are you comfortable in the quiet, Addie?”

I frown and feel my nipples pucker when he reaches up and tucks my hair behind my ear. His fingers are warm.

And when he’s this close, I can’t help but breathe him in and enjoy the scent of him.

              “Why shouldn’t I be?”

“Some aren’t. Some need chaos, noise. The quiet makes them nervous.”

              You make me nervous.

              I lick my lips again.

              “I don’t mind quiet. You?”

              “I love the quiet.”

              I smirk. “You’re a musician.”

“And I love music too. But the quiet is where the truth lives.”

              I blink once, twice.

“Where the truth lives?” I’m whispering now.

He simply nods. “There’s no distraction. No way to deny what is. It’s honest.”

“And you claim to be honest?”

“To a fault,” he confirms. “I’d also love to hear more about this sexcation you’re scheming.”

I feel my cheeks flush and turn away, taking another sip of my wine.

“I was simply being silly with my friends, Jake. Drop it.”

He doesn’t answer. Damn the fucking quiet.

I’m a 30 something sun lover living in the Big Apple (read New York).I’m a book and coffee addict and lover of all things elephants.

I get easily distracted by pictures of sexy guys and have tons of book boyfriends.I keep all my alpha males chained to my basement and guard them fiercely.*Back off bitches*I like to see Jason Momoa as a lot of those boyfriends, because ….. mmmmmmm JASON.MOMOA!

I’m a part time graphic designer (yes, everything you see on UTC has been done by me), run my husband's business from home and on a good day I’m a self appointed superwoman (she who can do it all).I love blogging with my girls and I couldn’t do it any other way!My first love is everything paranormal, but in the past few years I’ve re-learned to love contemporary romance.Every once in a while I like to mix things up with a historical romance, a steampunk or an LGBT book.Because I need variety to avoid book slumps.I don’t always need an HEA although I prefer one, and I love authors that can rip my heart out and make me ugly cry.

Great review, Francesca! I really love Kristen’s writing style and the strong sense of family and friendship that she weaves throughout her stories. I am really excited about this book and its potential. After falling in love with the world that she created in her With Me in Seattle series, I need more!

As for my song – I have so many that it is hard to choose BUT, one of my all time favorites is Extreme’s MORE THAN WORDS. I know, I know it’s a pretty old song but the lyrics are just timelessly beautiful.
