Welcome back to UTC! So your new series will be a two-part tale of forbidden love. Can you please tell us more about NEVER TEAR US APART and what was it about that forbidden love trope that called to you to write this story?
Thank you so much for having me! NEVER TEAR US APART is about a girl who was kidnapped and the boy who rescued her was the son of her kidnapper. Fast forward years later and they meet again, though she doesn’t realize it’s him. The book is told in alternating points of view and goes back and forth between the past and present. Regarding the forbidden love trope – there is something so delicious and romantic about two people who shouldn’t be together yet they’re drawn to each other anyway. I love that.
Can you tell us more about Katie Watts? What was your favorite thing about writing this heroine?
My poor Katie. She’s had such a tough life after what happened to her when she was 12. I can’t imagine what that would be like. But I wanted to show her as a survivor. As a girl who’s blossomed into a young woman who is trying her best and is desperate to have a normal life. That’s all she wants – is to be normal.
My favorite thing about writing Katie was showing her grow and become stronger. And her response to Ethan as they started to see each other. He gives her exactly what she craves — he makes her feel normal.
You’ve chosen a very unique narrator to tell this story. What was the greatest obstacle in writing this story?
Hands down the subject matter. Kidnapping and rape of a child is not an easy topic to tackle and I let readers know upfront that this book isn’t for the faint of heart and might be too much for someone to handle. I tried my best to handle the scenes with sensitivity. I don’t want to focus on the horrible act (though I must confess….I love writing a villain. LOVE IT. And to me there are two in this book), I want to focus on my characters. I love them.
This book is a departure from your previous work and it touches on subjects that are a bit darker. How different of a mindset did you have to be in to dive into this story?
I consider NEVER TEAR US APART is closest to ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND if you compare it to my other books. Drew had experienced something awful in his past in OWG and that wasn’t easy to write about either. But I like pushing it as far as I can.
To get the in the proper mindset to write the book(s) wasn’t that hard. Here’s where I admit my absolute fascination with true crime. I’ve been addicted to watching true crime shows, I enjoy reading true crime books, John Walsh is my hero and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is the charity I give the most to. I devoured books written by kidnap victims and realized quick they all shared a common trait – they are strong. So incredibly strong to not just give up. They survived. They are heroes. That’s what I wanted my Katie to be.
This is a story about survivors, both Ethan and Katie. What do you see as their biggest strength?
Both Katie and Ethan soldier on despite everything. Katie could’ve turned into a complete basket case and no one would’ve faulted her for it. Ethan could’ve turned to a life of crime or just been a worthless human being and would’ve surprised no one. But they didn’t go that route. They wanted to be strong. They chose to live their lives as best they could. I say it’s because they knew they would encounter something better down the line — and that’s each other. 🙂
Do you have any writing rituals?
I really don’t. I’m sort of all over the place. I listen to music for some books, I don’t for others. I do tend to binge write as I get closer to my deadline. I also prefer writing at night. Even though I do this full time, I have no distractions when my kids are at school, it’s ingrained in me to write at night I guess. Like I used to when my husband worked full time and traveled a lot so it was just me and our babies at home. The minute I put them to bed I was writing, writing, writing.
How do you celebrate on release day?
I’m too busy hanging out on social media to celebrate on release day! Though my husband and I will go out for a sushi lunch later during release week. 😉
Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?
Pantster! I can outline, give a rough synopsis of what I’m writing because I have to (editors like that sort of thing LOL) but ultimately I fly by the seat of my pants through the book. Plotting takes the fun out of it for me. I like to be surprised by my characters. If you as the reader are surprised I can almost guarantee I surprised myself too.

Perfect for readers of Colleen Hoover, Jay Crownover, and K.A. Tucker, the first novel in this darkly sexy contemporary series from bestselling author Monica Murphy kicks off an emotionally powerful two-part tale of forbidden love.
A long time ago, when I was fifteen and a completely different person, I saved a girl’s life. I spent only a handful of hours with her, but somehow, we connected—and I’ve never been the same. No one understands what we went through. No one knows what it’s like to be us. We survived, yet I don’t feel like I’m really living—until now. Eight years later, I find her. I want to make her mine. I need to make her mine. But she’ll hate me forever when she finds out who I really am.
