Welcome to Under the Covers! As fans of your previous work we are very excited about your new series! You’ve created a new spin-off series called the Saints of Denver. Can you please tell us where you got the inspiration for this series and why you wanted to write it?
Well the inspiration came from the fact that I had all of these secondary characters from the Marked Men still floating around and they all had unresolved stories I knew I could tell. I hate an unfinished story! Really the moment I knew I wanted to do a spin-off was when Zeb and Sayer meet in the Bar in Rowdy’s book. It was just a split second…barely any time on the page but I knew they would be amazing together….the rest of the books sort of fell in line after that.
There’s a line in the BUILT blurb that caught my attention: “She’s French silk, he’s all denim and flannel.” Can you further expand on Sayer and Zeb’s differences?
They are all around about as different as two people can be. From their jobs, she’s a lawyer he’s in construction, to their personalities…he’s boisterous, in your face and blunt….she’s very reserved, deliberate and kind of chilly. They come from different walks of life and they also struggle with different personal problems through the book….the beauty of it is not that they find common ground in order to be together and make their relationship work….it’s in the fact they appreciate those differences and recognize how what the other person has that they lack can help balance them out and make their life more complete! I love opposites attracting….that’s my favorite kind of love story to tell!
All your covers feature a hot man on the cover (and we love you for it!) Do you always have a specific face in mind while you’re writing your heroes or do you prefer your readers to use their imaginations more?
I never have a specific guy in mind. Just an image in my head and then when it comes to the covers I kind of have a “that’s close enough” mentality. I love most of my covers but none of them are exactly how I picture any of my guys….well the guy on Rome is almost 100%…lol….readers always have their own vision of things and I like it that way….I want the story to resonate with them…so they SHOULD have their own vision of the hero, but the covers will never be able to match everyone’s perfect guy so like I said…choose enough has to suffice.
From all the books of yours I’ve read, I definitely get the sense that you have a certain type of man/hero you like. So I want to know what is the most desirable trait/characteristic you think every hero should have to make him book boyfriend material?
I think they should love the heroine realistically. Like if she messes up he should be mad about it but then flat love shouldn’t just switch off. I like my hero’s to have value to them beyond being good in bed and sporting a pair of rock hard abs. They need to have a purpose beyond being a hero and a romantic foil and I think it’s pretty clear from the guys I write that I like the free thinking, edgy and smart men. I also like nonconformist…even if they are in a suit and tie! I like guys that can get their hands dirty but still have a delicate touch when needed. Lol…I also really like guys with good hair and nice shoes…give me a dude in boots with cuffed jeans any day.
How many books are you planning on this series?
There are 5…a Novella, Leveled which came out in Nov and then 4 full length stand alones.
BUILT is out in Jan
CHARGED will be out May 24th
Do you have favorite quote or scene from the book you can share without being spoilery?
There’s a scene where a secondary character who ends sup being very-very important to the story line looks up at Zeb and asks him if he’s a giant.
The scene because of the characters and what’s happening in it melts my heart….but you’ll have to read it for yourself to see why I think it’s so special.
What’s your favorite thing about Sayer and about Zeb?
I love that they are the couple that’s starting the new series. They get to set the tone for what’s to come next and I think they do a damn good job.
What’s next for Jay Crownover?
I have to finish editing the 4th Point book called HONOR which will be out in fall and then I have to work on the next 2 SoD books….plus I want to write a contemporary stand alone about a not quite a cowboy….always something going on 🙂
Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us today!

Series: Saints of Denver #1
Published by HarperCollins
From the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Marked Men books comes an electrifying new spin-off series,Saints of Denver, featuring all the characters fans have been dying to read about.
Sayer Cole and Zeb Fuller couldn’t be more different. She’s country club and fine-dining, he’s cell-block and sawdust. Sayer spends her days in litigation, while Zeb spends his working with his hands. She’s French silk, he’s all denim and flannel.
Zeb’s wanted the stunning blonde since the moment he laid eyes on her. It doesn't matter how many smooth moves he makes, the reserved lawyer seems determinedly oblivious to his interest—either that or she doesn't return it. Sayer is certain the rough, hard, hot-as-hell Zeb could never want someone as closed off and restrained as she is, which is a shame because something tells her he might be the guy to finally melt her icy exterior.
But just as things start to heat up, Zeb is blindsided by a life altering moment from his past. He needs Sayer’s professional help to right a wrong and to save more than himself. He can’t risk what’s at stake just because his attraction to Sayer feels all consuming. But as these opposites dig in for the fight of their lives, battling together to save a family, the steam created when fire and ice collide can no longer be ignored.
