Transcript of our conversation with Jayna at P.F. Chang’s discussing what she wants in a hero.
I thought hubby and I had been pretty covert about our meeting with Jayna Winston, the heroine from IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. But if the gaggle of fourteen buff SWAT cops standing around outside the PF Chang’s restaurant was any indication, I guess we’d failed at this particular mission.
“We were starting to wonder if you were even going to show up,” Cooper said, trying to act as if that was somehow my fault. “We’ve been waiting here for hours.”
“You could have called and told us you were going to be late,” Becker added. “We do have work we could be doing instead of standing around outside this place waiting on you.”
I lifted a brow at him, then turned my gaze on the rest of the Dallas Police Department SWAT team. Most of them suddenly found something interesting across the parking lot to look at, not wanting to make direct eye contact with me. That might seem like a strange way for a pack of big, strong alpha werewolves to behave—and in most cases, I’d say you were right. But in this case, since I’m the author writing their books, they knew they had to be careful or I’d have them falling in love with a fire hydrant—or maybe that big stone horse statue in front of PF Chang’s.
Hubby and I turned and headed for the restaurant, but stopped when they all started following.
“What are you guys doing?” I asked. “You can’t come in.”
“Aren’t you meeting with a women who’s supposed to become The One for a member of the Pack?” Remy asked in that charming Louisiana accent of his.
“Yes, but you can’t meet her yet,” I told him. “You’ll just have wait and see which one of you she chooses to end up with.”
“That doesn’t seem fair,” Becker countered. “We should have a say in this.”
I exchanged looks with hubby, then regarded Becker thoughtfully, then pointed at a tiny blue Smart Car parked in the lot next door to the restaurant. “I was going to give you a really cool Harley to ride in your book, Becker, but if you’re going to be a pain about this, I can always let you drive one of those.”
Thirty seconds later, all fourteen SWAT werewolves were jumping in their respective vehicles and squealing out of the parking lot.
“There, that wasn’t so hard,” I told hubby as we went in to meet the newest heroine for my SWAT series.
Not only was Jayna already waiting for us, but she’d been watching out the window the entire time.
“Were those the guys you were telling me about?” she asked excitedly.
I nodded as our favorite waiter came over and we ordered our drinks and meal. Hubby and I always order the same thing—Spicy Chicken—but Jayna was a newbie at this place, so I steered her towards the Lettuce Wraps.
“That was them,” I said to Jayna, picking up where we’d left off. “Did you see any you like?”
She nodded. “They’re all very attractive—and so big. I didn’t know they would all be so muscular. Wow!”
I shrugged and sipped my iced tea. “They work out a lot. It’s a werewolf thing.”
“I completely get that,” she said. “Any suggestions on which guy I should choose?”
I pulled out my planning book with profiles on each member of the SWAT pack. “What kind of guy are you looking for? Anything in particular that’s a big deal for you?”
Jayna thought about that for a moment. “I think I need a guy who’s really patient, one who will understand that I come with a little bit of baggage.” She winced. “Okay, maybe a lot of baggage. And he’s going have to be strong enough to deal with the situation I’m in, but also caring enough to handle all the responsibilities that will come with being a part of my life. If that’s not asking too much.”
I smiled as our food arrived. “It’s definitely not asking too much. And I already have the perfect guy in mind.” I turned my profile book around so she could see the picture of Becker. “Tell me, what do you think about motorcycles?”
