Welcome to Under the Covers! First things first, tell us 5 things about yourself that readers may or may not know already.
Well, the first thing is that Sparrow Beckett is actually two people writing together. We also write under the names Leia Shaw and Sorcha Black. We found that our styles blend well and our strengths and weaknesses balance each other. So when we write together, we make a pretty seamless team!
Secondly, if you’ve seen us at conventions, you’ll know we both have a major fetish for tattoos. Not only on guys, but we’re pretty heavily tattooed as well. It’s an interesting and fun form of self-expression.
Third, the reason we made the heroes in the Masters Unleashed series wealthy is because one half of the writing team (ahem, Leia) has a thing for men in business suits. Especially with their sleeves rolled up showing their sexy tattoos and manly forearms underneath. Mmm.
Fourth, speaking of wealthy men… Neither of us are rich or have ever been rich, so we found out pretty quickly that we kinda suck at writing men with money. Instead of having them buy jewels and expensive vacation, our heroes end up donating to charity and cooking at home. Lol.
Fifth, we dedicate each of our books to a different crush’s body part. So the first book is dedicated to Jason Momoa’s eyebrows (have you seen them? Talk about dommy!). The second book is dedicated to Chris Hemsworth’s golden locks (also swoon-worthy). We’re still brainstorming for the third. Ideas are welcome!
PLAYING HARD TO MASTER is book two in the Masters Unleashed series. Can you please tell us more about Ambrose? What do you hope readers will like about him?
Ambrose first appears in the first book, Finding Master Right. He’s kind of a player. A funny jokester who likes kinky sex but doesn’t want to be tied down in a relationship. His personality definitely clashes with his looks. He’s huge, lots of muscles, shaves his head, and his resting face is pretty fearsome. But once he smiles, he’s all charm and fun.
But these are BDSM books and despite his fun-loving side, he is still a Master. He appreciates the heroine’s love of humor, but there’s a time and a place for it. And there are certain points in the book where he proves that to her 😉
Tell us more about Everly! She’s definitely a curvy, clever girl!
Everly was a lot of fun to write. In some ways, I created her after my sister in law. They’re both hairdressers with over-the-top fashion sense. Everly dyes her hair funky colors and wears fun clothes. She’s curvy and despite having been teased when she was younger, she doesn’t let it define her. And why should she? She’s not hurting for attention. 😉
But she has a hard time finding a good match with a play partner or Dom. She enjoys being feisty and wants someone not intimidated by the saucy side of her. But she doesn’t want her spirit crushed either. It’s a tough balance when you’re a self-identified brat. She’s in search of a Dom who can laugh at her antics but master her as well.
As this series is heavily steeped in the BDSM lifestyle, what was your inspiration to writing it?
Umm. It’s hot? Lol. We’re both pretty fascinated with the D/s dynamics. The connection and trust between two individuals, and the non-traditional way it’s expressed. We also wanted to write a series that portrayed honest D/s relationships from both sides of the dynamic, and to show that many couples in the lifestyle have a sense of humor. Plus, it’s a lot of fun and gives us a chance to let our imaginations go wild.
In your opinion, what characteristics or traits do you think every Dom should have?
Definitely a sense of realism. There’s a lot of misconceptions out there about BDSM relationships. The first thing to remember is that Doms are people too. I know that sounds silly but you wouldn’t believe how often people seem to forget that. There’s no perfect Dom. There’s no perfect sub. We’re all human. We all make mistakes.
A Dom should be a good communicator, loyal, and honest. A submissive is putting a lot of trust into that person so he/she should be responsible and understand that ultimately, the power falls back on the submissive and that the Dom has to earn it and deserve it.
On a more personal level, a Dom should have a sense of humor. I couldn’t be in any kind of relationship with someone who didn’t laugh at my jokes or who was serious 100% of the time. What a drag! And anyway, sex is supposed to be fun!
Do you have a favourite scene in the book? If so, which one is it and why?
Oh boy. How dirty can I get? Lol. I think the hottest scene is when Ambrose ties Everly to a post in the house and blindfolds her then uses a vibe to make her orgasm over and over. There’s also a lot of dirty talk in that scene. If you like orgasm control… That one will get you going.
Can you tell us a little bit about the next book in the series, TO HAVE AND TO MASTER?
To Have and to Master is Konstantin’s book. Readers will meet him in book one and learn more about him in book two. I’m excited for his book because we’re exploring unconventional concepts like arranged marriage and the rural Russian culture. Our editor called this “the sexiest marriage-for-convenience book I’ve ever read!”
The heroine, Varushka, is deeply submissive – no bratting like with Everly – but she’s very sheltered and innocent. Enter wicked Konstantin, who wants nothing more than to defile her but feels incredibly guilty as well. The two have to figure out how their dynamic will work while deciding if they have a future together with so many differences.
Our signature humor is still there though. My favorite part is when Konstantin leaves Varushka with money for shopping while he goes on a business trip. When he returns, he finds a small farm in his back yard. She’d used the money to buy goats and chickens and had started building fences and tilling the land.
The poor guy has no idea what to make of it!
What was the last book you read and loved?
I’m a polygamist when it comes to reading, meaning I read more than one book at a time. Right now, I’m in the middle of a comedy memoir by David Sedaris called Me Talk Pretty One Day. I’m also reading Kresley Cole’s YA paranormal The Poison Princess. As well as After Midnight – a historical vampire romance by Teresa Mederios. A big variety there, but it keeps things fresh.
What’s the best and worst thing about writing with a partner?
The best part is the constant encouragement. There’s a part in a book that ever author dreads. We call it the sagging middle. If you’re gonna quit writing a book, that’s probably when. With a partner, you can split up the work and push each other to keep going.
The worst part for us is that we have very different taste in character names. If we’re gonna argue when we’re plotting a book, it’s usually about names. Lol.
What’s next for Sparrow Beckett?
We’re sticking with what we do best, which is writing BDSM erotic romance. But we’re changing up the sub-genre a bit. Masters Unleashed is contemporary. Right now, we’re working on a darker series called Immortal Masters, which is about vampires and their human “pets.” It’s very sexy, a little more hardcore but still within the realm of what Sparrow Beckett is known for. So that’s in the works for December. And then we have the start of a bad boy romantic suspense series I’m calling The Fast and the Furious meets BDSM. We’re waiting to hear from publishers on that one so fingers crossed!

Abandoned by his submissive years before, Ambrose has avoided long term relationships. He amuses himself by hooking up with his buddy’s exes. That is, until he meets Everly—a curvy girl with a big personality, who refuses to be ignored. Just when he thinks he’s found a girl he can trust, he finds out she has big opinions about rich men. Telling her he’s wealthy will ruin everything, but he can’t collar her with this huge lie hanging over them.
Known as a brat in their small kink community, Everly can intimidate even the most experienced Doms, but Ambrose is different. Not only does he charm the pants off her, he makes her crave his mastery, too. However, Ambrose’s trust issues run deep, and Everly isn’t willing to be ‘temporary’ forever. Ambrose is hiding something from her, and that secret is keeping them apart. Can she get her scaredy-Dom to commit, or is he a lost cause?
A second later, he swung her over his knee. She yelped in surprise. Changing into a short skirt and leggings when she’d gotten home had been an excellent idea. Would he do what he’d promised in the club and pull them down?
Fuck. She was wet already. Her breasts poured out of her bra—a hazard of being a DDD—and her nipples tightened.
But she wasn’t easily cowed, and he needed to know that. “Am I supposed to be intimidated by a hand spanking? Please. I’ve played with canes, Sir.”
He chuckled. While she hung over his legs, she wondered if he was the kind of Dom who could make her scream. Unlikely with just his hand. Maybe he had a belt he could take off. Or she could get her toy box from the other room . . .
“Ouch!” A wide streak of heat spread from where he’d hit her. “Where did you get the paddle?” Did he keep one in his back pocket?
“That was my hand, sweetheart. Still not impressed?”
He paused then ran his hand over her ass, soothing the sting there. Maybe she was slightly impressed. He had a fucking hard hand.
“You gonna tell me what you were thinking, or should I keep going?”
After two smacks? He had to be kidding.
“Huh? Did you say something? I just dozed off.”
He laughed, making her body shake against his. “Such a little brat.”
“Your safeword is ‘red,’” he said, serious now. “If you don’t want to play, I suggest you say so now. Otherwise, you’re agreeing to be mine. For now.”
He waited. She pursed her lips.
“Since you have a safeword, I’m taking your stubborn silence as consent.” With that, he lifted her skirt and yanked her leggings down, taking her panties with them.
Holy shit. He doesn’t fuck around.
She dug her fingers into his legs and braced herself. Was she afraid of him? There weren’t many Doms that could inspire that in her. That sliver of fear, of uncertainty, was one of her favorite parts. She clenched her thighs together to relieve the ache there.
“Fuck, you have a gorgeous ass,” he mumbled.
Her face heated. Men loved it because it was round enough to grab onto, to hold while they fucked her, or to take a good beating.
Grunting, he adjusted himself underneath her body, muttering something about her killing him. She wasn’t sorry.
A moment later, he brought his hand down on one naked cheek. Hard. She gasped and shut her eyes as the pain peaked then faded. But then he did it again, just as hard. And again. He fell into a rhythm quickly—slow enough to make her feel each one, fast enough that she didn’t have time to recover before the next one landed. And he wasn’t holding back.
Her bratting must have hit a nerve for him to spank her so hard. Still, she was known in the scene for being a stubborn bottom. She had plenty of cushion back there.
Minutes went by, and he kept going faster and harder. At least it felt harder. Her ass was burning now. Worse than the last session she’d had with George, a top from the club. And he’d used an actual paddle.
Unable to stop herself, she started to squirm, trying to dodge the blows. He held her easily and kept up his unrelenting assault. Damn, he had a hard hand.
The pain was intense and she started to kick, then twist to free herself. Tears pricked her eyes. She was gasping for breath. But no way would she safeword for a fucking hand spanking.
Her suffering became obvious, to her shame, when she couldn’t keep the yelps and whimpers in anymore.
“Ambrose,” she finally pleaded, in a voice almost too small to hear.
“Did you have something to say about my hand?” He rubbed his hand over her sensitive skin.
Her thighs clenched as wetness pooled there. God, how could she be so horny after that?
When she didn’t answer, he flipped her to kneel between his legs. Her face was probably bright red, but she hoped he didn’t see the tears in her eyes. Thankfully, she managed not to let them fall. She was putting her reputation to shame. What kind of brat cried during a hand spanking?
“A brat masochist.” He tsked. “You are a handful, aren’t you?”
She didn’t answer, figuring the question was rhetorical. Also, she didn’t want to embarrass herself with a trembling voice.
“Did you think I couldn’t hurt you? Hmm?”
“And now what do you think?”
He wouldn’t let her get away with not answering, she was sure of it. After a deep breath, she pulled herself together and said, “You have a hard hand, Sir.”
Chuckling, he ran his hand down her hair, tenderly, as if it would make up for the other pain he caused. It didn’t. “I know you’ve played with canes, but I’m not the kind of guy to jump into that. I need to know your pain tolerance first. Not to mention, I call the shots here. Not you. I don’t tolerate topping from the bottom.”
“But, Sir . . .”
“I’m so good at it.”
He laughed. “I don’t doubt it. But that’s what frustrates you about other Doms, isn’t it? They let you get away with it. You know deep down inside, that’s not really what you want.”
She kept her gaze on the floor to keep him from seeing the truth in her eyes. No need to show him everything all at once.
But he wasn’t having it. With his hand under her chin, he lifted her head so she had to look at him.
“Am I right?”
Their gazes locked. His blue eyes seemed to search her, pull answers from her without her permission. Shit. She was used to building walls, and here came Ambrose, looking in the window. He wouldn’t let her hide.
She nodded, feeling warm and safe for some reason. Maybe, just maybe, he could really handle her.
Was it too much to hope? To trust?
“Good girl.” He stroked her cheek with his thumb.
