“There’s plenty of ups and downs, many frustrating moments too but I think it’s all worth it in the end because you get a very well-done romance filled with angst.”~ Under the Covers

I don’t know what it is about a Mary Calmes book but I just can’t seem to hate anything she’s written. This time I decided switch things up and try one of the audiobooks. Thus far, I’ve only read Calmes’ books so this was going to be a new experience for me and it turned out, I really like her books in audio as well. Sometimes I love reading a series but when I try to listen to the audio, something just puts me off it. While the narrator pronounced some words weirdly, I felt like I could overlook that because the story was just so fun.

HEART OF THE RACE is definitely one of the more angtsy stories that Calmes has written. This is a romance between two best friends. Brian Christie was taken in a home when he was younger after being pushed around in the system. He grew up with Varro Dacien and his family, learning what it meant to be loved. However, as he grew older, he realized that he was falling in love with his best friend. Ever since he realized how destructive his feelings could be to their relationship, Brian has been pulling away.

Now older, Varro has established a nice career for himself riding motorcycles and when he gets into a serious accident, only Brian is able to wake him up. The thing about Varro is that he is completely clueless. He doesn’t know how much Brian burns for him or that he cares about him more than his own family so the distance that they both have to travel emotionally is very far. Neither of them are good at communicating and as one pushes, the other pulls. It gets quite complicated but Calmes is just so good at writing romance that you can’t help but root for them. There’s no roadmap for to get to where they want to go so Varro and Brian must figure out how to get there on their own. There’s plenty of ups and downs, many frustrating moments too but I think it’s all worth it in the end because you get a very well-done romance filled with angst. While it may not be my favorite Mary Calmes book, it’s still worth the read I think.

About Mary Calmes

Mary Calmes lives in Lexington, Kentucky, with her husband and two children and loves all the seasons except summer. She graduated from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, with a bachelor's degree in English literature. Due to the fact that it is English lit and not English grammar, do not ask her to point out a clause for you, as it will so not happen. She loves writing, becoming immersed in the process, and falling into the work. She can even tell you what her characters smell like. She loves buying books and going to conventions to meet her fans.

I feel the same about her books. I can’t not like her stories even if something like the angst takes away from my enjoyment a little. I have this one on the list to read.

Thank you for the review. I too have enjoyed everything I have read by Calmes so far. I am still slowly working my way through her backlist. Will definitely be adding this to my list.
