When Reality Crashes Fantasy…
Don’t you hate it when reality comes along and beats the shit out of your favourite fantasies? There are so many things I adore in books and especially in romance, that when I think about them I have to face the fact that in reality it would drive me into a murderous rage.
Best example, those damn sexy alpha male heroes, they’re overly domineering, controlling and too gorgeous to be true and I know plenty of us have a weakness for them…in our favourite romance novels. However, lets face facts, in reality these guys wouldn’t last more than a week, one of two things would inevitably happen:
A) A restraining order
B) Murdered in their sleep
And if A) didn’t work, we would have to default to B anyways. Either way, our HEA would be bruised, battered and burned. But, without pesky reality getting in the way we love them, their bedroom antics (which, actually I may enjoy in reality) and caveman behaviour gets them added to straight on to the book boyfriend list.
Urban Fantasy also has a lot to answer for, I like to think that I am one of those kick ass heroines, full of astute observations and witty comebacks, not to mention all that black leather. But I’m going to have to face reality, I;m probably just that chick at the back that gets eaten by the big bad monster within the first few chapters. Or even worse, the TSTL heroine who panics and runs back into the house containing the big bad monster and then commences to be its light snack. As for the black leather…nobody needs to see these hips encased in anything that tight. Or maybe I do, it might scare the big bad monster away (or I may be mistaken for it!)
As for sex…lets not get on to the all the unrealistic expectations romance like to fling at us. I’m just glad I didn’t start reading romance when I was still a virgin…can you imagine? You go in thinking you’re about to have your all night long world-rocking session, with only a “tight pinch” to account for your hymen and then two minutes later, you’re a bloody mess with your poor shattered illusions raining down on your like confetti.
The world of romance may be at a time slightly ridiculous and unrealistic place; however, I can’t imagine my life without it. Besides, what’s wrong with a little fantasy anyways?
Annnnnd I will stop myself there, before I start waxing lyrical about my love of historical romance and fantasy as well; no one needs to know about my elf fantasies. As you can tell, I adore and day dream about most romance genres, and my three big loves are 1) reading about romance 2) writing about romance and 3) talking about romance with my gals. Which, is why I love Under the Covers so much, I get all my bookish needs satisfied and don’t get judged when I talk about my favourite characters like they are real people. Which they are right?
