We are hitting the halfway point of our first Writing Teams Week and I have to admit I didn’t realize this was a team until a recent signing. Kindle Alexander writes great m/m books and I think you’ll be surprised to hear about their story as much as we were.
Thanks so much for stopping by to talk a little bit about your writing process! First off, how did you decide to work together?
Thank you for asking us to drop by. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have. You asked how we decided to work together. We really didn’t decide, it just happened. Our story is probably different than most writing teams out there, simply because neither of us had ever entertained the idea of writing a story, let alone publishing one.
We lived in the same city, had mutual friends, but really didn’t know each other. It wasn’t until we both ended up moving to another town a few miles away and our daughters started cheerleading together, that we became friends. After she lost her daughter to a drunk driver, I wanted to be there for her but didn’t know how. So I called her every day to talk. Over the weeks our friendship grew and we became much closer. Somehow during that tragic time we fell into reading books together. We had our very own reading club. Every day we would spend hours on the phone discussing the books we were reading.
One day we were on the phone and I told her about a friend request I got on Facebook. I ask her if she knew the person. She thought the name sounded familiar and said I should accept the request. I did and it ended up being Queen Beth, a role-play character from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. We were thrown for a loop with that one. We never knew a role-play world existed on Facebook. Long story short, we started roleplaying on Facebook and that led to us writing fan fiction. The writing was therapeutic and helped us both through some difficult times. So it just felt right that we continue to write books together.
Can you share a little bit about your writing process? Who does what and at what point does it happen?
Our stories are based off the role-play characters we started on Facebook. We just change their names and let them play dress up. We bounce ideas off of each other, talk out what direction we want the story to take and figure out the characters HEA. After we come up with a solid plan she roughs it out, then sends it to me and I add my part. We continue to pass it back and forth until we’re happy with the story.
When coming up with new ideas or working out a problem in a book, how do you usually tackle a problem together?
We are always discussing new and different situations for our guys. We both have strong opinions and ideas, but we think alike, so that works in our favor. If we have a problem, we talk about it until we work through it.
What would you say is the greatest strength of the other writer? She has many strengths, but I’d have to say the greatest is the way she drives the story.
To me (Kindle 2.0) my writing partner is magical with words. She can describe something so well that you visualize exactly what she wants you to see. She paints the picture with words. I love that! I never get sick of reading her words. She’s my favorite writer.
Out of the two of you, who writes the dirtiest sex scenes?
That’s a good question. I don’t know. She will probably say I do, but don’t let her fool you, she has a dirty mind.
Kindle 2.0: She’s lying, she is our sex scene writer. I’m rolling my eyes at her. Do you see me rolling my eyes Kindle 1.0? I am.
Who is most likely to cry during edits?
Definitely my writing partner. That’s probably the part she hates the most.
Kindle 2.0: I hate edits. I hate edits so bad that I know when my editor hasn’t done a good edit if I’m still liking her. Every time I finish edits in a book, I want to drive to Florida and stab my editor. I have the Depends ready. (IM KIDDING – sort of) In saying that, the editing process is critical. I think it’s a good measure to be frustrated. It means your story has really been dissected.
Who is most likely to get details wrong in a book?
Hahaha! My writing partner! Shhh …just don’t tell her I told you that.
Kindle 2.0 Again – rolling my eyes. It’s the PTSD from the edits.
And finally, what is the best thing about getting to work with your best friend?
Everything! We get to spend all day talking about hot, gorgeous men, coming up with storylines and plotting out scenes for the characters we love so much. I’m very blessed that I have her to share all of this with. It’s something I wouldn’t want to do without her.
Kindle 2.0: After this interview and reading her answers I’m going to say: I don’t know – I don’t work with my best friend. She’s four or five down on the list now. I’m kidding. I agree with her answer. She’s truly one of the most special people in my life. I’m blessed and incredibly lucky to know her.
