Welcome to UTC! Since your last visit here you’ve written a new book! Can you tell us a bit more about PLAYING DIRTY?
Playing Dirty is about two sports agents (Shaw Matthews / Cassidy Whalen) vying for a coveted partnership at their San Diego agency, Striker Sports Entertainment. Shaw Matthews is your typical arrogant alpha male who thinks he has it in the bag. But by-the-book Cassidy Whalen throws him off his game. Simply put, this book is about two people who hate each other, but can’t seem to keep their hands to themselves, and both are playing dirty to get superstar quarterback, Denver Rockford, to sign on the dotted line.
What kind of research went into writing PLAYING DIRTY?
Google. LOTS of googling. And some Jerry Maguire thrown in for good measure. I also made a trip to Stonington, Maine so I could get a better feel for the way Cassidy thinks. For Shaw, I talked to someone who knows a lot about life in Detroit and the mentality.
What did you find most difficult about writing this book? How did you overcome it?
Getting the characters to talk to me, because both were stubborn as hell. I went through a bout of writer’s block with this book because I couldn’t get to the place I wanted to be, mentally and emotionally, in my personal life. I still don’t know how I overcame that. But somehow, I did. It’s really hard to dive into a fantasy world when everything in your real life is so chaotic. Maybe that’s why both of these characters seem a bit chaotic at times as well.
If Shaw were to write a dating handbook what would be his number one rule?
Never jizz inside them. He really doesn’t think the world needs a bunch of little Shaw minions running around. Besides, they would only end up being more competition for him in the future.
Do you put a little of you in your characters. If so, which character and what traits?
Most definitely. Cassidy has my drive and determination. Sasha has my uncanny ability to make bad decisions in relationships. Demi has the strength I hope I have. And Quinn has just a hint of my sass. As far as Shaw, Landon, Chaz, and Denver are concerned, each of them possesses traits from the different men I have known in my life.
What can we expect from Getting Rough (Monkey Business Trio #2)? Will there be the same heat as Playing Dirty?
Yes, but in a different way. For one, the setting has changed. The story takes place in Stonington, Maine, where life is more simplistic and has a much slower pace than San Diego. It’s like a world unto itself. So Getting Rough is more about these two characters taking a moment to gain a perspective of self and figure out what they really want. Plus, I added a huge love triangle for shits-and-giggles. And if you guys fall in love with Casey Michaels like I have, you will understand why it is such a hard decision for Cassidy to make. It has made this the toughest book I have written to date. Because we all want the “good guy” to win. But what happens when you have two “good guys” and both are alpha heroes?
Will the secondary characters have their own HEA or book?
Right now there are no plans to give the secondary characters their own books. But their stories will continue through the trio. Though I have to prepare you—they are not as present in Getting Rough (Monkey Business Trio, Book Two) as they will be in Coming Clean, (Monkey Business Trio, Book Three).
What’s next for CL Parker?
(Insert laughter) I wish I knew the answer to that question. If you are asking about future books, I’d to have say my focus right now is on finishing The Monkey Business trio. And trying to get over Casey Michaels. I don’t know where the market will lead me from there, but I have started a paranormal romance that at this point could be up to nine books. Again, it really depends on the market. On a personal level, I’m just trying to figure out my life and when I might see another human again. Because, duh, its summer and I should probably shave my legs.
For fans of Bared to You and Beautiful Bastard comes the start of an irresistible new erotic romance series in which competition is the ultimate seduction.
Shaw Matthews plays to win, and he intends to snag a coveted partnership at San Diego’s hottest sports agency by signing America’s top athlete. Only one woman stands in his way: rival agent Cassidy Whalen. But eliminating the competition will be Shaw’s pleasure when he concocts an ingenious plan to seduce Cassidy and show the beautiful ballbreaker who’s the better man for the job. That is, until Cassidy turns the tables—and their steamy encounters start breaking all the rules.
Cassidy has worked hard to make it in a man’s cutthroat arena, and she isn’t going down without a fight, not even against the six-two alpha hunk whose rock-hard body awakens desires she’s never known before. As Cassidy shares night after night of unending passion with Shaw, the game begins to change. Now Cassidy stands to lose everything—unless a fiery contest of wills can become a winning proposition for two people who keep raising the stakes.
Playing Dirty is an erotic romance intended for mature audiences.
“What are you doing?”
“You’re taking liberties. Why shouldn’t I?”
It was cute. It was also about to get both of us into some serious trouble. Trouble I’d been seeking, true enough, but the reality was that we could never come back from this, so it was a risk we both needed to be willing to take. My little buddy jerked in my pants, telling me to stop thinking too much and let the woman have what she wanted.
“If you go below the belt, you’re giving me permission to do the same.” It was a fair warning.
“I’m curious,” she said.
“I want to see if you’re as big in person as—” She stopped abruptly.
“As all the women in the office say you are.”
I drew my head back. “Really? How big do they say I am?”
“Hmm, I hate to disappoint you, but the truth is, none of them would actually know.” I never mixed business with pleasure, though it seemed I was hell-bent on breaking all the rules with Cassidy to make sure I won the partnership. But was it really just about the partnership? I shook the thought free because I couldn’t afford to think like that.
Taking her hand, I maneuvered it between us until she was cupping the bulge in my pants that had grown to astronomical proportions. “That should give you a pretty good idea, but you won’t know for sure until you see it up close and personal.” With just the right amount of pressure, my hand moved back and forth over hers so that we were both stroking me through my pants while Cassidy watched. “And if you want to see it, you’re going to have to take it out yourself.”
