“I almost couldn’t resist finishing it, it was like a car crash and the Jeremy Kyle show all combined; morbidly fascinating and extremely disgusting” ~ Under the Covers
Wow. I think I need a moments silence; a moment to recover from what I have just read and maybe a few more moments in self-congratulations that I managed to finish it. Of course, I almost couldn’t resist finishing it, it was like a car crash and the Jeremy Kyle show all combined; morbidly fascinating and extremely disgusting. I know I am running against the tide of popular opinion by not immediately screeching this book’s praises, but then again popular opinion quite often leaves me scratching my head wondering if I have read the same book as everyone else.
Now, I don’t often give books less than a 2 star rating but Fire Down Below certainly inspired it. Normally, humourous books are my weakness, no matter how bad or non-existent a story line is, how shallow the characters are, if a book manages to make me crack a smile then I am happy. This did not happen. I understand that Debra Anastasia was doing this entirely tongue in cheek and it wasn’t meant to be taken seriously; however, it was like I had gone to the novelty section in the book shop and selected the toilet humour shelf and read my way through it. And like if I had done that, it was repetitive, tacky, boring and made me feel a little sick.
I am trying desperately to find something positive to say about this book, but honestly I got nothing. Maybe it’s me; maybe I am becoming miserable and heroines shitting themselves and fart jokes no longer appeals to me like they did when I was a teenager. I find I don’t mind. Either way, this book definitely wasn’t for me, I didn’t enjoy it, and no matter how morbidly fascinating the next book may be I will not be reading it.

I’m in the same boat. I am forcing myself to finish this wreck. I don’t understand why most of the content was put in there. Dropping her own name way too many times as if she wants it engraved in your brain. This is my first read by this author and I don’t think I’ll be attempting another. It’s not just the bathroom jokes and over self advertising that has me cringing. A uterus can swoon? Smelling the couch and wanting to smell his balls? Plus the character goes from blushing at the thought of a “dirty” word to being… Read more »
