Welcome back to UTC, Jennifer! So since your last visit here, you’ve written a new series called The Seduction Diaries series. Where did you get the inspiration for this series?

Thank you so much for having me on!

I never kept a diary myself, but my two girls are always starting “secret journals” and stashing them in hidden places all over the house. Of course, I find them. I’m the mom, it’s what I do! And some of these journals (and the secrets they wrote down) got me thinking. In this modern age of Twitter and Facebook, our private thoughts are always out there, but I think in the Victorian era, when women were expected to be quiet and demure (but actually weren’t), a journal might have been a very important place for a young woman to express her deepest, darkest thoughts. I took that idea and ran with it for my new series.

The first book is called DIARY OF AN ACCIDENTAL WALLFLOWER. What can you tell us about this release?

I am so excited to share DIARY OF AN ACCIDENTAL WALLFLOWER with my readers. It comes out February 24th, almost 11 months since my last book, so I know readers have been not-so-patiently waiting for it!

Pretty and popular, Miss Clare Westmore knows exactly what (or rather, who) she wants: the next Duke of Harrington. But when she twists her ankle on the eve of the Season’s most touted event, Clare is left standing in the wallflower line watching her best friend dance away with her duke.

Dr. Daniel Merial is tempted to deliver more than a diagnosis to London’s most unlikely wallflower, but he doesn’t have time for distractions, even one so delectable. Besides, she’s clearly got her sights on more promising prey. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

All Clare wants to do is return to the dance floor. But as her former friends try to knock her permanently out of place, she realizes with horror she is falling for her doctor instead her duke. When her ankle finally heals and she faces her old life again, will she throw herself back into the game? Or will her time in the wallflower line have given her a glimpse of who she was really meant to be?

We know we love the theme but what do you think is the appeal of the wallflower in historicals, as opposed to reading the same heroine in a contemporary?

Oh, I don’t know that we don’t love reading about contemporary wallflowers…I know I still love a good bookish-librarian-who-saves-the-world story! For me, it’s all about our instinctive drive to cheer for the underdog. Triumphing over adversity is a popular theme no matter the era. In historicals, wallflowers are always the underdog, the girl who has been dealt the terrible hand in life… and there is no better revenge than helping that girl find true love.

Can you share with us your favorite quote or snippet from the book, that hits your heart every time? Without being spoilery of course.

Better yet, I’ll give you an image!

Aside from your new series, you’ve recently released HER HIGHLAND FLING! What is it about William MacKenzie that makes him droolworthy?

I have always loved William MacKenzie, ever since I wrote him as the joking older brother of the hero in WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND. I received so many emails and requests from readers wanting to know if he would get his own story that I knew I couldn’t let them down. In terms of drool-worthy, there’s his physique, of course. But what really got me drooling was his heart… it’s bigger than the Scottish Highlands. Plus, he’s smart enough to know a man’s gotta let a lass make her own choices in life. That is why he deserves his own happily ever after.

Her Highland Fling

Let the Games Begin …

William MacKenzie has always been protective of his Scottish village. When Moraig’s economy falters, he has the perfect solution to lure wealthy Londoners to this tiny hamlet: resurrect the ancient Highland Games! But for this to work, William knows he needs a reporter to showcase the town in just the right light.

A female journalist might be a tolerated oddity in Brighton, but newly minted reporter Penelope Tolbertson is discovering that finding respect in London is a far more difficult prospect. After receiving an invitation to cover Moraig’s Highland Games, Penelope is determined to prove to her London editors just how valuable she can be.

Penelope instantly captures William’s heart, but she is none too impressed with the gruff, broody Highlander; however, as she begins to understand his plans, Penelope discovers she may want more from him than just a story. She’s only got a few days … but maybe a few days are all they need.

We all love a good Scottish brogue! What is it about Scotland that has inspired your stories?

I had the privilege of visiting Scotland waaaay back in 2001, when I deployed to Great Britain to work on the devastating Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak that swept the country. I was working as a veterinary epidemiologist stationed in Newcastle, right on the border with Scotland, and after working nonstop for 2 weeks, I was suddenly gifted with a few days off. So I did what any closet reader of historical romance would do… I hopped in my rental car and headed for the Scottish countryside. I was exhausted and heartsick, and I found that quick trip absolutely restorative. To this day, I can remember how beautiful the landscape was, how fresh the air smelled. My family is now planning their first trip to Scotland, and I can’t wait to show them everything I love about it.

What’s next for Jennifer McQuiston?

I have to finish the Seduction Diaries, of course! Next up is book #2, which I *think* is going to be called THE SPINSTER’S GUIDE TO SCANDALOUS BEHAVIOR.
In it, Lucy Westmore’s spinster aunt dies and leaves her a falling-down cottage in Cornwall, as well as an old journal that gives Lucy all the instructions she needs to live the life of a happy spinster. When her father insists she sell property, Lucy is determined to do whatever it takes to claim her inheritance, even if it means doing something truly scandalous. But it turns out someone else wants her cottage… and the gentleman in question may just want her heart as well.

That is so neat that she took the time to tour Scotland on her own when she had the chance. I love the idea of this series about wallflowers and their diaries. The Scots series sounds good too.
