Welcome to UTC, Karen! The Fever series is my favorite series so I am thrilled to get the chance to ask you some questions about the newest release, BURNED!
BURNED marks another change in the Fever series where Mac and Barrons are back with a vengeance. How will their presence set the pace for the rest of the series?
It definitely amps up the action and tension of subsequent books because you’re not only getting Dani’s (and insert name:)) journey but Mac & Barrons’ as well. Combined, the two stories work so much better than they would have otherwise! That was a large part of the reason I reconsidered my original plan of writing three Dani-centered books followed by two Mac & Barrons books. Running the storylines concurrently was not only necessary, but delivered a more exciting, fast-paced read.
Anyone who has read your books before will know that nothing is quite as it seems and you’re not afraid of taking risks with your writing. I think most readers will be interested to see what will come of Dani in this book. How do you think readers will react to the changes Dani experiences? Why are these changes necessary in Dani’s personal journey?
I hope they love it! I absolutely adore writing Dani. I love her humor, her youthful exuberance and her determination to live, no matter what. Not merely survive, but LIVE, out loud and in color. I planted clues in ICED about her pending fate, and I think some readers may already be anticipating it. With Dani, I explore something that is perhaps more difficult to deal with than losing a sister. There’s a quote I have taped to my computer that’s applicable: “What you have become is the price you paid for the things you thought you wanted.” Granted, some things were done to Dani without her consent, but there are many things she chose. What you send out to the Universe, what you ask it for, is usually what you get, and generally not at all how you thought you’d get it. Nothing is free. Everything has a price. The larger you live, the higher that price may be. But as Dani would say, “Go hard or go the feck home.
With so many other players in the game, such as the Unseelie Princes, Christian, Dancer, the MacKelter twins and even Kat and Sean, how do you keep track of events, characters, etc?
It’s a challenge! It helped that I wrote a lengthy Fever compendium while I was working on BURNED, revisiting every character and rehashing their significant developments. That being said, with each character’s POV, it’s like slipping into an old familiar skin. I begin writing, and suddenly I know everything they know, feel everything they feel and it all comes rushing back.
You’ve been sharing more details about the Nine. Apart from Barrons and Ryodan, who will we most likely see more of? Do you have a favorite?
In BURNED, you’ll see a lot more of Ryodan, Lor, Kasteo and Barrons and also learn another name. In the glossary at the end, you’ll find an interesting rumor about the Nine. As far as favorites go, there’s only one JZB but Ryodan utterly fascinates me. I can’t control him anymore than I can control Barrons. Lor is a blast to write because I get to be as raunchy as I like and indulge my dirty mind, LOL. Kasteo is an onion I can’t wait to peel. That rumor in the glossary has been tantalizing me for years!
What can you tell us about the next book in the series, FEVERBORN?
I’m finally getting to do things with Mac and Dani that I’ve been dying to do. Mac and Dani are darker, edgier, sexier and more empowered than ever before. You’ll find out more about the Nine (or should I say the Ten?) It’s coming out like a wild roller-coaster ride. Everyone is getting into everyone else’s business, as you’d expect with so many Alphas on the page and the resultant chaos is a blast to write!
Thank so much for having us, Karen! Congratulations on the release of BURNED!
Thanks for having me!
It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger. When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed. Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal. It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth.
Karen is graciously giving away a SIGNED copy of BURNED to one lucky maiden! Open to US and Canada only.
