We’re squarely in the holiday season, with Thanksgiving behind us and with the winter holidays ahead of us. Even where I live in Northern California (where there’s no snow unless you’re in the mountains), the air is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement as to what’s to come. For many, the highlight of the entire year is the time they spend with their friends and family over the holidays, laughing, talking, eating, sharing old memories, and maybe making some new ones.
But what happens after the holidays are over? For Mandy Aligheri, the heroine in New Year’s in Napa, it’s the after that scares her. She’s been working so hard for so long, that there doesn’t even seem to be life outside of her laboratory. And while she has a loving family to head home to for Christmas, afterwards, it’s back to the grind.
Mandy looks ahead to the future, and doesn’t like what she sees. So she does what many of us do—she makes some new year’s resolutions—to stop working so much and to figure out how to relax. Even more importantly, she fully intends to follow through with these changes. Except there’s a crimp in her plans in the form of one gorgeous, charismatic winemaker Liam Flynn—a guy with whom Mandy has history. Liam is a distraction that Mandy doesn’t need—not if she’s going to figure out how to manage the rest of her life. Except that Liam is exactly what Mandy needs, and when Mandy stops stressing and starts living, things begin to get really good (and hot).
But there are still hurdles in Mandy’s way. Her demanding job doesn’t just disappear while she is on vacation. Neither does the rest of her regularly-scheduled life. So how does she get past the things that are holding her back? How does anyone?
Willpower? Sheer grit? Luck? Help from friends and family?
Mandy is lucky. She’s smart and strong, but she has someone who believes in her. In them, together. Liam forces Mandy to step outside her comfort zone, encourages her to figure out what’s really important, and gently pushes her to follow her dreams. We all need someone like that. And during this holiday season, I hope you have that someone by your side, spurring you onward into the new year and the rest of your life.
Driven by guilt, biotechnology researcher Amanda Aligheri spends every waking moment in her Silicon Valley laboratory. Desperate for a change, she makes a New Year’s resolution: go to Napa, relax, and achieve some balance. The problem? There’s no chance to soul-search while tempting-as-sin winemaker Liam Flynn is around. Mandy and Liam have history together, and one glance at his easy smile reminds her exactly why she fell for him the first time.
A software engineer at heart, Liam Flynn left a lucrative position at a San Francisco tech company in order to help his dad manage their third-generation family winery, and he’s done his best to take the business to the next level. Two years ago, sparks flew between Liam and Mandy, but the moment he mentioned commitment, she turned and fled back to the safety of her lab. When Mandy shows up at his winery, she’s just as beautiful, intelligent, and stubborn as he remembers…but this time Liam isn’t giving up without a fight.
Will one romantic, wintery week in Napa be enough for Liam to convince Mandy he’s the one for her, or when the new year comes will she forget about her resolution and return to Silicon Valley—and her research—without him?
