#12DaysofChristmas: Our Favorite Book Tropes of 2014

Posted December 16, 2014 by Under the Covers Book Blog in Top Ten, Under the Covers / 277 Comments

10christmas

Every year our reading “likes” change a little bit and in 2014 there were some book tropes that we seemed to want more and more of!  Check out how our tastes compared to yours this year and let us know what you couldn’t get enough of in 2014 in the comments.

1-1Enemies to Lovers

I think we can all agree that a little dislike just adds to the spice.  And there’s nothing quite a good angry sex scene or two for good measure.  This year there this seemed a popular choice in our reading and definitely something we want more of!

2-1Student/Teacher

Forbidden love.  You read them and wonder how can you be ok with this.  But nevertheless, we were glued to the pages of these somewhat disturbing at times, love stories.

3Dragons

if there is one mythical creature that continues to shine during the onslaught of Contemporaries out there, it’s the big, bad, fire-breathing dragons!

4Best Friend’s Sister

What’s worse than lusting after your best friend’s sister? Totally off limits, but totally hot. We adore these books that explore those conflicting feelings!

5Friends to Lovers

You share laughs and cocktails but beneath all that, you two share some feelings for each other too. Who can say no to a friends to lovers story where you can root for the characters as they FINALLY fall in love?

6Rock Stars

Rock stars are doing more than just taking the stage, they’re also taking the Romance world by storm!

7Small-Town Romances

Charm and sweetness will always be in abundance in these fictional small-town packed with quirky characters and fun-loving antics.

8Rekindle PNR Love

One of our first passions has always been paranormal romance, but in the past few years it seemed contemporary stories were taking over our reading time.  This year we’ve rekindled our love affair with everything paranormal.  Some of our favorite authors had amazing books come out this year that knocked our socks off!  We are rejuvinated in paranormal and can’t wait for 2015!

9Strong Heroines

There really isn’t anything better than a heroine that takes life by the horns and dominates situations.  With their take-no-shit attitude and go-for-what-you-want approach to situations they have always been the type we look for and this year it was no different.

10Heart Breakers

Sometimes you’re just in the mood for something that will break your heart just a little.  Or a lot.  Maybe you were just needing something dark, or you needed to cry.  And you can always count on a heart breaker to test your limits and put you through the ringer.

I love most book tropes with just a few exceptions that make up the shorter list. I had a good time with the Fake Mates and the Fated Mates tropes along with Arranged Marriages (obviously mostly HR books). I tried Sports themed Romance for the first time this year. I will always adore my military and western romances. Romantic Suspense enemies- possibly the bad guy stuff made a resurgence for me. I also loved several Beta hero/heroine romances.

Okay, I should stop there. Haha! Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. I love Nalini Singh’s books.

I’m not a maiden but hope I still qualify! Been coincidentally reading a lot of YA fiction this year and found that they have some of the best strong female protagonists, best developed characters and a clearer, less cynical view than a lot of adult protagonists. Been a very refreshing change

My favorite was the enemy to lovers theme. I couldn’t seem to pass one up.

I’ve tried Rock Stars for the first time this year and really enjoyed them. My favourite is PNR though, there’s nothing like escaping into a really good PNR, especially if they have a strong heroine too.

Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope. There is nothing better than a lot of tension that builds up and gets to that final moment of satisfaction. Besides, this has given me the best verbal sparrings ever!

While I’ll always be a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope, in recent months I’ve very much been into the polar opposite: enemies-to-lovers! I also love strong heroines.
