It’s the Journey not the Destination
When Francesca asked about writing a blog regarding the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) experience I jumped at the chance. Then I thought, good gracious what am I going to write about? Then she said I had until Wednesday to submit it to her, keep in mind it was Saturday, and I thought sure I have plenty of time to figure this out. Now it’s deadline time and do you think I’ve thought about what I want to say and have this all planned out? Well, to tell you the truth when it comes to the blog post and my novel I don’t have a plan at all. See, I thought I had a plan. I thought I had a good outline, and I have slowly come to realize that as soon as my fingers are poised over the QWERTY keys it’s a free for all! I have no idea what’s going to appear on the page. I just know that during the month of November I’m going to spend time daily with my characters and see where they end up.
I’m not complaining. Well I’m not complaining much. Even though the story in my head has ended up completely different on paper and just because my heroine insists on being called Jenna even though I wanted to call her Jessica…that isn’t really a complaint. And just because my hero and heroine are a little awkward with each other at the moment is no reason to complain. Although, I’m pretty sure Jenna is complaining a lot because I’m making her look bad in front of her hero who admittedly doesn’t talk much and is driving me insane with his silent moments. The fact that neither of them does anything that I tell them to do is just a small matter. And don’t even get me started on my villain!
It sounds crazy, and anyone who doesn’t have a dozen characters living in their head would agree that it is crazy. It can be demoralizing and many of my writing moments are filled with self-doubt. Half the time I’m not sure if what I’m writing makes sense, but then every once in a while I have a moment of “oh wow, that’s actually kind of good” and laugh at myself. What makes it worth it though is seeing the words appear as I type them on a blank page and suddenly I’m following along on a journey that is new and uncharted. I can’t wait to see where my characters take me next.
As you can see from her bio, Valerie also takes the most beautiful nature pictures and
she is including a copy of her 2015 Calendar in this giveaway!
