Hi Renee, welcome to UTC! We are very happy to have you here today. If you had to describe your new book AFTER THE RAIN in three words what would they be?
LOVE AFTER TRAGEDY
AFTER THE RAIN is an emotional and intense book, when you wrote it, did you go through a draining roller coaster of emotions?
Thank you so much. I originally wrote After the Rain as a screenplay. The settings were so vivid in my mind and the scene at the end of the third chapter was something I thought about over and over, sadly. Because screenplays are mainly just pages of dialogue, much of the detail is left out. Writing the novel allowed me to fill a lot of that in, so yes when it was finally time to write out the scenes in great detail, I was a bit of a wreck. It was coming to life and the smells and sounds and details made it very real in my mind. After knowing the basic plot for so long, it was really emotional and fulfilling to write it out fully.
Take us through your day, do you have scheduled times when you write, or do you only start scribbling when inspiration hits? Do you listen to music, have the TV on or do you prefer complete silence? Paint us a picture!
I absolutely have a schedule. All of my writing takes place in the morning after I take my kids to school. I write for about four hours every day. Sometimes when I feel stuck, I’ll just stop and go for a run or take a bath and try to plot in my head. I usually write to music but I try to listen to more instrumental stuff because occasionally if I understand the lyrics it will trip me up. After I pick up my kids from school my writing day is over. Mainly because I cannot write with distractions or interruption but also because I have a lot less focus in the afternoon.
Do you take inspiration from celebrities or models for your characters? Who do you see as Nate and Avelina?
Strangely, I don’t see the characters in my novels as celebrities because they’re unique in my mind. If I had to cast it I would think of someone like Nina Dobrev and maybe Chris Pine.
We love audiobooks at UTC and AFTER THE RAIN is also available on audio. Have you listened to it? What are your thoughts about it?
Actually no, I haven’t listened to it. The only one of my books I’ve heard on audio is SWEET THING and it was very well done, so I imagine that the rest will be as well since it’s produced by the same company. I’m really looking forward to it being out in the world.
Do you have a favorite scene that is non-spoilery you can share with us?
One of my favorite scenes is when Avelina meets Jake in the very beginning. I thought it was an innocently sweet meeting between the two of them.
What can we expect next from Renee Carlino?
Before We Were Stranger is finished and scheduled for a summer release. It is a “love, interrupted” story inspired by a real Craigslist missed connections post about a guy who sees the “girl who got away” on an NYC subway after fifteen years of searching.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing with us today!
