Welcome to UTC! We are happy to participate in this tour and have you here today talking about STRIPPING HER DEFENSES.
Thanks for having me Francesca! I’m so excited to be here today because I love this blog.
What can you tell us about the second book in your Ex-Ops series STRIPPING HER DEFENSES?
The whole Ex Ops Series has a combined theme of second chance romance. So, in this book Riley Sullivan runs into his ex-wife in the most unexpected place. A strip club. They’re both a little shocked to see each other there at a biker owned strip club because neither one of them would have ever stepped foot in a place like that while they were married. The difference now is, they’ve both changed a great deal.
See, their marriage went down the drain after Kara was in a car accident that cost them their unborn son. She was devastated that Riley wasn’t there for her when she needed him because he chose to go on a voluntary SEAL mission instead of staying home with her. At the time, in her haze of grief, she felt that was unforgiveable.
Several years later, they’ve run into each other again, and they discover the love is still there, but can they work past the pain they’ve caused each other? Not to mention, Riley is there in Miami, posing as a member of the Regulators Motorcycle Club with the club’s permission. He’s working on an undercover operation with his Black Ops Unit to investigate missing strippers connected to a sex slave ring.
There’s action, suspense, but most of all the story of two people who are meant to be together working past their pain and anger to reconnect.
What draws you to writing about a man in uniform?
Oh boy. Let me count the ways. 1) They’re sexy. 2) They have a sense of honor most people will never understand 3) They’re sexy. 4) They could probably kill you with a Q-tip. Call me twisted but that’s totally awesome. 5) They’re sexy. 6) If you marry a military man and then have little girls he’ll be able to scare the bejesus out of any boy who comes around. 7) Have I mentioned they’re sexy?
How difficult is it to you mix suspense and romance, how do you find the perfect balance?
Great question. The Ex Ops Series differs from other romantic suspense books in the sense that it is lighter on the suspense aspect and more concentrated on the couple and their story. I try to make sure that the underlying mission isn’t lost in the plot, that’s where the suspense and action come in, but my focus will always be the couple. So, I consider it a delicate balance of 2/4 couple story ¼ humor and ¼ suspense. If I can meet that quota, I’m a happy writer. Although, I will admit that equation shifts as the story needs.
What’s your favorite quote from STRIPPING HER DEFENSES?
Oh, I have a few but my absolute favorite is actually from a secondary character, Hammer. He’s the Sergeant of Arms in the Regulators MC and readers will see him in my spin-off series I’m co-writing with Chelsea Camaron. Let me give you a peek at Hammer when he confronts Riley in a tense situation over Kara Sullivan:
“You take one more step towards Kara, and I’m gonna splatter your brains all over the walls and call it redecorating.”
Some say I have a sick sense of humor sometimes, but I love his idea of redecorating.
My next favorite line would be from Riley:
“Wasn’t it funny how a relationship could die a tragic death, but old habits were still hard to break?”
To me, that is a fact. A relationship can die, but emotions, thoughts, rituals and/or habits seem to remain. This makes it that much harder to move on after the ‘death’ of a relationship.
If you could summarize this couple in 120 characters or less, what would you say?
Riley and Kara are a couple who endure intense emotional pain, fail from the trial of it, learn the hard life lessons and then finally come out of the situation better, stronger individuals than they were during their marriage. They have a fiery passion, intense love, and in the end, a determination that I envy. They’re both some of the strongest characters I’ve ever written in the sense that they endure the tragic loss of their son, but somehow find the will to move on in their lives even though they feel like half a person without their spouse by their side. Quite frankly, I found them inspiring and I’m quite proud of them.
What is next for Jessie Lane?
My next release will be December 8th, 2014, ICE (Regulators MC #1), co-written with Chelsea Camaron. Then The Demon Who Loved Me (Big Bad Bite Series #3) will release February 28th, 2015. Also, I’m working on Sweet Recovery (Ex Ops #3) while writing ICE with Chelsea. SO I MIGHT have it much sooner than originally planned. 😉
Thanks for stopping by!
Thank you for having me! I always love being here. I hope everyone who reads Stripping Her Defenses sends me a message to let me know what they think. I love hearing from readers. Happy reading everyone!
He can’t change the scars on her body…
but fate will give him a second chance to mend the scars he put on her heart.
Riley Sullivan and the Ex Ops Team are headed to Miami undercover… as bikers. Following up a lead, the men will perform their investigation acting as members of the Regulators Motorcycle Club with the club’s permission. Surrounded by hardcore bikers and investigating missing strippers, Riley finds the last person he ever expected to see again—his ex-wife.
Kara Sullivan left the man she loved after a tragic accident cost them their unborn son. After years of therapy, she’s come to grips with the loss and has re-emerged from the pain a brand new person. That doesn’t mean she’s ready to face the man who inadvertently broke her heart, and who she’s hurt in return.
Riley has never stopped loving her and he never will. He’s ready to fix their marriage and move on with their lives, however Kara’s reluctance to renew their relationship isn’t their only problem. Danger lurks just around the corner… and there’s a chance she could disappear permanently.
