~J.M. Darhower~

Welcome to UTC! Let’s get to know you a little better. Who is J.M. Darhower? Tell us five interesting things about yourself that readers wouldn’t know about you!

Oh my… this is a hard one! I’m pretty open about myself so some people will know these.

1-I’m a boy band lover. NSYNC was my everything growing up and now I have an undying obsession of One Direction.

2-I think I was born a few decades too late. I legit get sad sometimes thinking I’ll never meet my writing idol Mario Puzo or watch Frank Sinatra perform live or experience the Hollywood that made Marlon Brando and James Dean stars.

3-I’m an overall artistic person. I like to draw and paint and sew. I make all of my own book covers because I can’t imagine not making them, frankly. I love creating.

4-I get a thrill out of editing. I know, I know… weird. But it’s like a high to me. I’m always pressuring my friend to let me edit her work because there’s something calming to me about grammar.

5-I’m an advocate against human trafficking and routinely donate some of the proceeds from my Sempre books to Love146’s Round Home (the storyline pertains to human trafficking).

The Monster in His Eyes series has done so well! For readers who haven’t read this series yet, can you tell us more about it?

Monster in His Eyes is a story of a sheltered college girl named Karissa who gets swept off her feet by an older man named Naz. She becomes wrapped up in his world only to discover things aren’t always what they seem. Naz is a man of many secrets 😉

TORTURE TO HER SOUL is the sequel to Monster In His Eyes. We get a little more insight from Naz. What do you think may surprise readers when they read more about him?

I think some readers will be surprised to discover he’s not as calm and collected as he seems. Naz carries himself with confidence at all times and he doesn’t let his nerves show, but inside, he’s quite a tortured man. He’s not heartless… he’s just hardened.

You are releasing REIGNITE soon, the second book in the Extinguish series.  What can you tell us about it?

The Extinguish series is vastly different than everything else I’ve written. They’re paranormal romance, starring the notorious Lucifer and an angel named Serah. In Extinguish, the apocalypse was triggered, and  we pick up with them right afterward in Reignite and watch the aftermath as they all have to deal with the consequences of their actions. It’s heartwarming, and steamy, with a little bit of humor and a whole lot of angst.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Everywhere, honestly. The most random things often inspire me. I’ll be driving down the street and pass someone walking on the sidewalk and a story will form in my mind… their hypothetical “back story”. That’s probably weird but that’s how my brain works. A lot of it comes from my emotions, though… I’ll get angry about something and channel it through a character.

When writing a dark story, do you have to do something special to get in the right frame of mind?

Nothing really special. I look at where the story is going and what I want to accomplish and put on music that sets the tone. I have playlists for all sorts of emotions. When I write, I need to have music… the louder, the better.

Can you share the details of a typical writing day for you? How many hours to you write per day?

Oh wow it varies so much. Some days I’m lucky to force out 10 words. Once or twice, I’ve managed to somehow write 10k words. Usually it falls somewhere in the 3k range. 5k is a good day. It all depends on where I am with the story and what I’m working on. Usually around the 60% point it starts flowing out fast and I’ll pull 12 hour days writing.

Are there any other authors who you look up to? If so, why do you admire them so much?

There are plenty of authors whose writing I love but as far as admiring THEM, I’d have to say I strive to be like John Green and JK Rowling. Genuinely intelligent and humble people despite their success, focused on helping others and making a difference not only with their work but as human beings, not letting any negativity stop them. I admire that.

What’s next for you?

So much! I actually have a few other books working toward release after Reignite, the first being a prequel to my Sempre series, out October 27th. I also have another mafia-based series in the New Adult genre as well as a stand alone contemporary romance coming soon.

Thank you so much for sharing with us today!

Thank YOU!

Don’t say it unless you mean it…

It’s a simple concept, one I’ve said time and again, but something people don’t seem to comprehend. You should choose every syllable carefully, because you never know when somebody will hold you to your word.

Somebody like me.

I’m not a good man. I’m not. I know. I have enough darkness inside of me to rid the world of every stitch of light. But there’s one I could never harm, one light I couldn’t bring myself to snuff out.

She thinks I’m a monster, and maybe I am. I taunt her with my touch, get a thrill out of torturing her soul. But I’m not the only one. The world is full of monsters, and I’m not the most dangerous one out there.

Not even close…

God help me, I love her.

I do.

And God help anyone who tries to take her from me.

I find that interesting that music takes you where you need to go. Music is so instrumental in movies and tv shows to set a tone it makes sense that it does the same in the writing process. Thanks for the post and the giveaway!

Great interview. Adding her books to my wishlist. Thanks for the giveaway

I love that you are an advocate against human trafficking. I also donate a lot to different places for it. Thanks for the great interview! I look forward to reading this!

Lori Foster also does a book series about battling human trafficking, the books sound good and I’ll be looking into them.

I loved you comment about your music…”the louder the better”! Amen! If it doesn’t rattle windows or teeth you don’t have it up high enough.

I love that she’s a One Direction fan! I am so freaking stoked for Reignite. It’s one of my most anticipated releases for the remainder of 2014. I also loved her Sempre series and can’t wait for the freaking prequel! And I didn’t know she made her own book covers. The original cover of Extinguish is one of my favorite covers.

Cheryl Rogers

I also live in the Carolinas but I was going to comment on the author’s use of music to get her into the correct mood for a particular piece of work. I love that you also make the covers and you are an editaholic. In college I used to study with very loud music but now it is distracting. I think music is a great way to get your muse, I just can’t do that! Thanks for the great interview, the great giveaway!

Random things. Nice.

Thanks for the chance! <3

Great interview! My first concert was NSYNC.

[…] Under the Covers Book Blog sat down with J.M. Darhower (virtually, of course) and talked to her about her Monster in His Eyes and Extinguish series.  I’m soooo excited for the follow-up to Extinguish!  She also talks a little bit about what she’s working on now.  Check out the interview here!
