Welcome back to UTC! The Dare To Love series has really taken off, but for readers who are new to the series, can you please tell us more about it?
Thanks! I love hanging out here. Thanks for having me back. I’m so pleased with the response of readers to the DARE TO LOVE series. As this is my first indie published series, it’s very special to me. The series is different in a few ways – I’m writing shorter and much hotter books which is fulfilling the reader in me who loves to read those kind of stories. And I’m releasing faster which is great for both me and for my readers.
The Dare to Love series revolves around a dysfunctional family – because DAD had 2 sets of kids (legit and illegit) who found out about each other later in life when one of the illegitimate kids was critically ill and needed bone marrow. The fallout shaped them all – That’s the initial Dare to Love series – and many of the books revolve around the Miami Thunder Football team, which the Dare Family owns.
There are three branches of the Dare family. Ian and his siblings (the “legitimate” family), Alex and his siblings (the “illegitimate” family) and Gabe and his siblings (the NY cousins) and the NY cousins: Gabe (Dare to Surrender), Decklan (Dare to Submit) and Lucy (coming in 2015) are all these exceptionally hotter type books while at heart still being a Carly Phillips story.
- # 1 — DARE TO LOVE (Ian and Riley) — Legitimate Family
- # 2 — DARE TO DESIRE (Alex and Madison) — Illegitimate Family
- # 3 — DARE TO SURRENDER (Gabe and Isabelle) — NY Cousins
- # 4 — DARE TO SUBMIT (Decklan and Amanda) — NY Cousins
- # 5 — DARE TO TOUCH (Olivia and Dylan) — Legitimate Family (coming 1.13.2015)

DARE TO SUBMIT featured Decklan and Amanda and dipped its toes into BDSM a little bit. How did you enjoy bringing this sexier side to the series?
I loved loved loved writing the sexier side of the series. As I mentioned, it’s been a natural extension of my writing. My critique partner began to point out the hotter elements in my books even as far back as the Serendipity series. She even asked – what did you read last night, LOL. My men wanted to dominate more, be more Alpha. It starts with Ian in Dare to Love – he needs to dominate. Alex in Dare to Desire can be more playful. Then Gabe – Dare to Surrender and Dylan – Dare to Submit each take BDSM a little further. Not too far, for those who aren’t sure if they’re comfortable. A little tying, a little spanking, a lot of enjoyment for the heroines. At heart, I’m still telling a story and there’s a reason for my heroes and how they behave. Nothing I write is gratuitous. But I absolutely enjoyed this and plan to go there again in Lucy’s story, Dare to Seduce (sometimes 2015).
DARE TO TOUCH is Dylan’s book. He works for the Miami Thunder Football Team you established in Dare to Love. What do you find most appealing about sport romances for you as a reader?
I like giving readers a broader look at sports romance. I don’t just do a sports hero – as readers may remember the Hot Zone had sisters in a PR agency brought in by their sports agent uncle. And now with DARE TO LOVE we have The Miami Thunder football team – but there hasn’t been a hero player … yet! There are still Dare sisters to come! But I love sports romances because of the fairytale aspect of dating a hot sports guy who every woman wants but his sole focus is YOU. A very wise editor (and friend) told me to create heroines who readers want to be – but can still empathize with. And I try to do that! I think readers will feel for Olivia Dare once they know her story. J
Two of your previously written stories MIDNIGHT ANGEL AND KISMET are being rereading in a boxed set called Billionaires in Love. Can you tell us more about these stories?
I decided to package 2 novellas in one book (print and ebook) for readers in time for the holidays. I wrote Midnight Angel years ago and it still seems to be a favorite – reunion story, hot Hollywood action hero returns to get the girl – or does happily ever after only happen in the movies? And The Playboy’s Second Chance (formally titled Kismet) – another reunion story – a woman who finds herself again and her old love – are they strong enough this time around?
You’ve written so many Contemporary Romances over the years and are still able to keep things fresh. What would you say is the key to keeping your readers engaged with Contemporary set stories?
Good question! I think it’s easier to answer as a reader – a compelling conflict keeping the characters apart while at the same time, deep growing feelings that neither the hero or heroine can ignore. I love to dig deeper into backstory of my characters, no matter how short the story. I always think what created us is central to the people we are – and how we react to things. And I love the idea that there’s always that one person who can make anyone believe in love.
What would you consider is the biggest challenge in writing Contemporary stories?
Well I think you mentioned it above – Keeping things fresh is the biggest contemporary challenge. In theory, there are only so many types of stories to tell. The author has to come up with something special each time – something to make the reader want to return to her next book – because the writing is strong enough or the characters innovative or fresh enough – or because they just make you feel.
I know you’re an avid reader who enjoys recommending books to people. What’s the latest book you’ve read and loved?
Oh my least favorite question! My friends are writers, I read everyone and everything. I don’t always love a story but you’ll never hear me say that about another writer publicly. I looked back in my Kindle. I loved The Viper by Kele Moon and Jack by my friend Juliana Stone.
If you could pick three fictional heroes to meet in real life, who would you pick and why?
Oh my. You don’t end with the easy ones, do you, LOL! Can I pass? I have no idea!

Billionaires in Love
Two classic Carly Phillips stories about love, loss and second chances …
The Playboy’s Second Chance
This story was formerly titled Kismet. Since the title was confusing to readers, I changed the name and now bring you The Playboy’s Second Chance. I hope you enjoy my sexy, stand-alone novella.
Trevor Dane, Wall Street Hot Shot and billionaire, has everything — money, power and any woman he could possibly want yet he isn’t happy. When his latest interviewer turns out to be the one woman he’s never forgotten, Trevor sees a second chance and he won’t let Lissa Gardelli’s wariness or old hurts stop him from getting back into her bed… and her heart.
Hollywood superstar, Dylan North, revisits his home town with the express intent of seeing his first love once more, to see if they can reignite the love he stupidly threw away ten years before. The last thing Dr. Holly Evans needs in her life is her high school sweetheart returning and stirring up old feelings. But Dylan is determined to convince Holly that happily ever doesn’t only happen in the movies.
