~Jaye Wells~

Welcome to UTC, Kate. First off, let’s get to know you a little better. Who is Kate Prospero? Tell us five interesting things about yourself that readers wouldn’t know.

Who am I? Hmm. Well, I’m a cop. That means I spend most of my time chasing down potion junkies and cocky coven thugs. It’s less glamorous than it sounds. I’m also kind of a single parent. I have custody of my little brother Danny, who is sixteen going on forty. Also less glamorous than it sounds.

Five interesting things about me:

  1. One time during a bust, I accidentally set a river on fire.
  2. The last date I went on was with a mortician who took me to a funeral director’s convention. Talk about dead on arrival.
  3. Even though I bitch about him a lot, I actually like having Drew Morales as my partner. Don’t tell him I told you.
  4. I try to be a good role model for Danny, but sometimes a girl just needs to eat a snack cake for breakfast.
  5. Sometimes I still get the itch to cook potions, but don’t tell anyone.

Potions can be dangerous things. Ever encounter one that you knew was totally out of your league?

Not yet. Since I swore off cooking it’s been a lot easier to not get in over my head. But now that I’m working on the DEA task force things are getting hairier. It’s only a matter of time.

Here at UTC we don’t just read a lot of books, we like to pretend that we’re kickass heroines. What is one quality that you think every good Urban Fantasy heroine should have and why?

A brain. Fists and guns are great, but if you’re not smart about when to use them they can end up being a liability.

You’re about to head over to the bar to have some drinks before ending the night. If you could call up any characters from other series, who would you like to have drinks with?

I think it would be cool to hang out with Kara Gillian from Diana Rowland’s series. I think we’d have a lot of good cop stories to swap.

What would you be drinking and in what environment would you feel more comfortable?

I prefer dive bars with cheap beer.

Do you do any socializing with Ms. Wells other characters while in her head?  (ehem Giguhl)

Giguhl? Oh, you mean that mouthy hairless cat? Jaye keeps him in a cage after the unfortunate humping incident.

Now all kidding aside, we promise we won’t tell ANYONE.  What is Jaye Wells really like?  Give us all the deets.

She’s pretty cool. Except that for someone who writes so much about fighting and cops and the grittier sides of life, she’s pretty boring and a total wimp. She also talks to herself a LOT, and there are all these weird people living in her head. I say this as someone who spends her day with conjoined twin homunculus informants and grew up in a coven of criminal wizards. The chick’s got issues. But she’s mostly harmless. I think.

So lets be honest….Morales or Volos?

What do you mean? They’re both pains in my ass.

Your favorite way to kick back and relax after a long taxing day?

Cold beers on my porch with my best friend, Pen. She keeps me grounded. I complain a lot about having a best friend who’s a psychologist, but she’s frustratingly good at giving life advice.

From your perspective, how would you describe your series and why should someone read it?  In case they’ve been living under a rock and haven’t already, that is.

Jaye says the series is a lot like a cop show but with magic. I don’t think my life is like a TV show because cases aren’t always neatly wrapped up and are usually really messy. But I do get pretty interesting cases and I usually get the bad guy. But I’m always dealing with lots of tricky issues about addiction to magic and the gray morality of fighting the War on Dirty Magic. But the books are also about my professional and personal relationships and how they affect my job, as well as how my past as a member of a powerful dirty magic coven affects my cases today. It’s just my life, you know?

Thank you so much for spending some time with us today!

Thanks for having me. Jaye says that I should probably mention that the second book in the series came out this week on August 12. It’s about that time a Blue Moon caused everyone in Babylon to freak out and that psycho tried to set off a dirty magic bo—Oh, now she’s telling me not to tell too much. Anyway, thanks!

cursed moon

When a rare Blue Moon upsets the magical balance in the city, Detective Kate Prospero and her Magical Enforcement colleagues pitch in to help Babylon PD keep the peace. Between potions going haywire and everyone’s emotions running high, every cop in the city is on edge. But the moon’s impact is especially strong for Kate who’s wrestling with guilt over falling off the magic wagon.

After a rogue wizard steals dangerous potions from the local covens, Kate worries their suspect is building a dirty magic bomb. Her team must find the anarchist rogue before the covens catch him, and make sure they defuse the bomb before the Blue Moon deadline. Failure is never an option, but success will require Kate to come clean about her secrets.

I liked Dirty Magic more than Cursed. I found Kate more unlikable, but I’m still interested in seeing where book 3 goes.
