“I did find Kelsey and Archer somewhat entertaining as a couple. They were just not memorable.” ~ Under the Covers
Here’s the thing about covers…they CAN be misleading. I saw this cover and immediately thought “hot biker book”. And although our hero rides a bike, this is not an MC romance. It is however, a family centered story. And I do enjoy those quite a bit (even more so than MC books). This book spins off from the series SPIRAL OF BLISS, being the story about Professor Dean West’s brother. Since this was my first read by this author, I missed out on some background because I didn’t read the previous books. However, I think this worked very well as a standalone. And as much as I thought Dean was interesting enough, I actually have no desire to go back and read his story.
But back to the brother, Archer West is a self proclaimed bad boy and the family black sheep. That might because he’s not 100% really part of the family. Archer’s brother, Dean, takes the rose colored glasses off of him at an early age, revealing he has a different father. And he’s the product of their mother stepping out and cheating on her husband. Archer has never been able to recover from that. He’s been a loose cannon ever since.
He is just misunderstood and needs some love. I liked him pretty quickly because he shows a caring side. One that is still looking for acceptance and love, and still tries to show that he cares for his family. Kelsey on the other hand is an atmospheric scientist, ex storm chaser and current University Professor. She has become this tough chick because of her past and she’s made something of herself. Now thinking that the grown up thing to do is giving up her passion for chasing storms and just working behind the scenes back from University.
I think that both characters could’ve been more. I liked Archer more than I liked Kelsey, to be honest, but I think they were both wishy washy and a bit weak. Their dialogue felt scripted at times. But what really got me ready to pull my hair out? The indecisiveness of both characters!!! The constant back and forth. The “I can’t be with you because of this and that … Ok I’ll leave… What do you mean? You’re giving up so easy?” behavior. Mostly on the heroine’s part. It happened once, it happened twice, it kept happening. I wanted to beat some sense into her! With a wooden spoon! Then it was contagious and other characters were doing it. Arghhhhhh Putting that aside, I did find Kelsey and Archer somewhat entertaining as a couple. They were just not memorable.
I loved the original concept of incorporating storm research into this book. It made it original and interesting for me and probably was my absolute favorite thing about the book. That and the small details that were key moments in the Archer/Dean brotherly dynamics as well as the Archer/Kelsey relationship building. There were so many cute moments (the tree house, the nickname, the coin, the comic book…), even if some of them could also be cheesy. Loved those!
I feel bad classifying this as new adult because by definition I think these two are older and should fall under just contemporary romance, but their maturity level? Yeah, just wasn’t there. As far as this being erotic romance? I think everyone has different ideas on what they consider erotic romance and what just falls on a sexy contemporary. So lets call this one sexy and lets leave it at that.

I get easily distracted by pictures of sexy guys and have tons of book boyfriends.I keep all my alpha males chained to my basement and guard them fiercely.*Back off bitches*I like to see Jason Momoa as a lot of those boyfriends, because ….. mmmmmmm JASON.MOMOA!
I’m a part time graphic designer (yes, everything you see on UTC has been done by me), run my husband's business from home and on a good day I’m a self appointed superwoman (she who can do it all).I love blogging with my girls and I couldn’t do it any other way!My first love is everything paranormal, but in the past few years I’ve re-learned to love contemporary romance.Every once in a while I like to mix things up with a historical romance, a steampunk or an LGBT book.Because I need variety to avoid book slumps.I don’t always need an HEA although I prefer one, and I love authors that can rip my heart out and make me ugly cry.
