Suzanne Reports from the Romance Author & Reader Event Edinburgh
Edinburgh, a land full of whiskey, kilts and between the 4-7 July 2014 romance authors and readers. Heaven one might say. This one certainly does. My long weekend was full to the brim with laughter, friends and yes sneaking pictures of men in kilts.
I was there to be an assistant to two of my favourite authors LH Cosway and Penny Reid. I was a slave to their every whim… And I enjoyed it immensely. First there was the delightful Ms Cosway, who was just lovely and had the best Irish accent, she doesn’t know this, but I now intend to stalk her every move *prepares night vision goggles and rope*.
Then there was Penny, ya know how when you stand next to an incredibly beautiful person and you just wanna stab them in the eye cos they bring out every insecurity you have had ever felt about yourself? Well, Penny was so insanely interesting and hilarious that it made me want to start making up riveting stories involving high speed motorbike chases, solving crimes and late night yacht races like I am some kind of 007 meets Nancy Drew character in my spare time and a little less ordinary. I also just want to clearly state I never had any irrational and violent urges to stab anyone in the eye. Much.
Anyways (reluctantly) back to reality. The signing went fantastically well, it was lovely to meet so many new readers and writers and put faces to names. It was a treat to have an event close to home and I hope they have many more so us UK peeps can have the chance to properly fan girl over our favourite authors and meet up with our fellow readers and bloggers. Also from the going-to-Scotland-to-stare-at-men-in-kilts perspective it was a huge success! If you haven’t seen the picture with me posing with the abilicious Stuart Reardon, here it is! I admit that maybe I spent the whole signing staring at him like the Creepy McStarey person I am, but he was in my line if sight (once I twisted my chair round) how was I supposed to resist?
It was also a learning experience, I now know-
1- No matter how many times you tell yourself you WILL NOT buy anymore than the books on your list/the books you have brought with you, that’s simply not true. You are lying to yourself, you will ALWAYS bring back twice as much as you planned to… Or is that just me?
2 – Napoleon wasn’t short. In fact he was rather tall for his time, it is purely the Brits taking the piss and propaganda that perpetrated the lie that he was short. Thank you Stephen Fry and some late night QI
3- Randomly shouting out Sporran in the hotel reception. Not acceptable. Who knew?
To finish off this post, here’s me looking awesome next to a castle!
I managed to pinch some books from LH Cosway and
some cool swag from Penny Reid that I am willing to part with!
