Burning Up July: Lorelei James

We are so excited to have one of our favorite erotic romance authors here today as part of our Burning Up July event.  We still remember the day she participated in our first ever erotic romance month (click here to read it)!  Now, the Rough Riders series has come to an end.
I know for us reading the last book in the Rough Riders series was a little sad, despite how much we loved the book. How did you feel writing the last book in the Rough Riders series?

Hands down COWBOY TAKE ME AWAY was the hardest book I’ve ever written. I cried nearly every day. And between us? I broke out in hives toward the end of the writing process. Not only because it was the longest book at 153,000 words, but because I was saying goodbye to the McKay family too…They’ve been part of my life for 8 years and I wanted to do right by the series, the characters and my readers. It was an ambitious book, telling a love story that spanned 50 years and I’m thrilled with the response it’s gotten!
Did you do anything special to celebrate/comisserate the end of the series?

I haven’t done anything yet, except for take a few weeks off and enjoy my summer 🙂 I’ve had people ask if I bought a fancy pair of custom boots, or if I’d consider getting a tattoo, but I’m still mulling over my options.
I love that this series comes full circle and it ends where it all began, when you started the series, had you planned on doing a book about Caroline and Carson?

Yes, I’ve known for several years how I’d end the series. I was afraid I couldn’t pull it off. I know my readers are mourning the end of the Rough Riders and the McKays, but as I’ve mentioned before, I got to do everything I wanted with this entire family. 16 full length books, plus 2 novellas and a few short stories are daunting for new readers–and I wanted to end the series on my terms. There’s nothing that scared me worse than having the Rough Riders series become stale and disappoint my readers, so I’m in a good place walking away from the McKays now. I do plan on writing a few short pieces set in the world at some point, as deadlines allow.
So, it has come to the end of the series, looking back on the series, who is your favourite couple? 🙂  Or if that’s too hard to answer, what’s your favorite thing about each couple?

Hah! Nice try! I don’t play favorites with my couples — that said the most recent couple is always my favorite because they’re the freshest in my mind, so Carson and Carolyn are my faves 🙂
One of the things we love about the Rough Riders series is how hot it is. Are there any scenes which made you blush as you wrote or read back? And which ones are they?!

While I’m writing the scenes I’m dealing with the emotions of sex, and how far the characters push each others buttons behind closed doors. The only time I blush about any of the scenes is if someone reads them out loud to me. Which is also why I’ve never listened to any audio versions–ever 🙂
With all the kids that the McKays are spitting out, are you considering doing a second generation Rough Riders series?

No second generation of McKays at this time. It’d break my heart to have to age the grandparents more than I already have, especially since some of the McKay couples have kiddos who are very young. I’ve had some readers suggest I write the stories without the older generation, but I think the appeal of the Rough Riders series is the family aspect, so without that, I know it wouldn’t be the same series that readers have come to love and expect.
Of all your characters which would you…
…..have a hot one night stand with?
Bennett McKay
….. A summer fling with?
Dalton McKay
….. Marry?
Kade McKay
Wow!  I see the loyalty here!  We asked Lorelei the same quick fire questions three years ago and her answers really didn’t change much 😉
So let us in to a day in the life of Lorelei James. Do you have a rigid schedule and make sure you are writing at certain times or are you more flexible? Listen to music or total silence? How does the magic happen?!

NO music ever while I’m writing, I’m too easily distracted and I start singing along. My schedule really depends on what stage I’m at in a project and I’ve always got several projects going on at once. The “new” writing stage I can easily work 12 to 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. When I’m editing a project is the only time I can work late into the night–well, late for me 🙂 — because editing uses a different part of my brain than creating. But when I’m deep in the throes of creating, I don’t want to leave the world I’m in until it’s done and I’ve sent my hero and heroine off into the sunset.
Do you have a short message to leave readers and lovers of your series with, now that it’s all over?

I’m SO SO SO thrilled so many readers followed me and the McKays on this journey. When I wrote LONG HARD RIDE 8 years ago I never expected it’d spawn a 16+ book series! But as grateful as I am, there are many other characters and situations and plot lines I’d like to explore, I’ve never wanted to be known as a one-trick pony, so to speak, and get pigeon-holed in writing nothing but the Rough Riders series forever. That’s why I started the Blacktop Cowboys series as well as the Mastered series. Being in a different fictional setting is inspiring to me.
What do you have planned next?
I’m finishing up SCHOOLED, which is a novella in the Mastered Series featuring Ronin Black and Amery Hardwick Black. It will release in digital only format on December 2nd. I’m also finishing up ROPED IN, a Blacktop Cowboys novella that’s part of the 1001 Dark Nights project and it releases on September 9th. Then I’m back in the Mastered series world, working on UNRAVELED and CAGED, both novels that release in March and May 2015, and then I jump into the Blacktop Cowboys world again with book 7, WRAPPED AND STRAPPED, which releases in September 2015. Right now I’m in promo mode for HILLBILLY ROCKSTAR, Blacktop Cowboys book 6, which releases in 3 short weeks!

Let’s hear it one more time for the Rough Riders Series!!!!!

She’s protecting his body and guarding her heart…

Country music star Devin McClain understands there’s a downside to life in the public eye, but the laidback Wyoming cowboy has never imagined he’d attract crazed fans who would do anything to garner his attention. When veiled threats become real, he agrees to hire a discreet security detail. But Devin is shocked when that bodyguard is a hard-bodied woman. He’s even more stunned to be attracted to the steely-eyed stunner.

Former soldier Liberty Masterson’s return to civilian life has been wrought with challenges until she lands a job with a prestigious security firm. But when she agrees to provide personal protection during a cross-country tour, she doesn’t realize she has signed up to masquerade as the playboy star’s girlfriend. Though she’s more comfortable in combat boots than high heels, she has no choice but to appear to be the sexy groupie Devin prefers.

Living in close quarters causes the chemistry between them to ignite, and Devin realizes he wants to turn their charade of a romance into reality. Although Liberty surrenders to his every whim behind closed doors, she fears the sexy country star doesn’t see the real her; and Devin can’t help but worry when the tour ends that there might not be enough between them to build something that won’t fade away…

i like jeremy and ava from the cowboy town series from kasey millstead

Texas Book Lover

I think it is damn near impossible to pick a favorite couple from this series they are all fabulous. I got hooked with Channing and Colby in Long Hard Ride years ago and after reading Carolyn and Carson’s story in Cowboy Take Me Away part of my wants to go back and experience it all over again!

I haven’t however read the Blacktop Cowboy’s series yet…I have 3 of the book on my shelf so I hope to start it very, very soon!

Lorelei James is an amazing author. Love all her books.

Amanda Williamson

Lorelei James is one of my favorite authors. I’m in love with her Rough Riders series and Black Top series! The Master series is great to. She knows how to write a great story and lots of hot Cowboys! Thank you Lorelei! Can’t wait to read more of her books!!!

Lori Meehan

Sad to say I’ve not read enough of the books to pick my fav yet.

It’s so hard to pick just one.

But if I had to, I think my favorite couple from Rough Riders would have to be Keely and Jack. I can’t even explain why, their story is just so fun, and I love that they went from “enemies” to Lovers and how their whole love story came to play.

don’t have one yet b/c I haven’t read any of this series 🙁 But I’m hoping to fix that!!! Congrats to Lorelei on the new release!

Slick Reads

Favorite couple hands down are Chase and Ava. Favorite cowboy is Kade (and I’ll fight Lorelei for him), like seriously he’s my main man. Favorite book as much as I adored Cowboy Take Me Away (it was just so freakin’ awesome) my favorite book remains Gone Country for a few reasons. Great interview guys!!

Elizabeth P.

haven’t yet this series but i have read other lorelei james books and enjoyed them!…

I haven’t actually read any of this series YET…I’m collecting them so I can read several together so no favorite yet but I know I will 🙂

AJ and Cord are my fave couple because 1 baby doll *swoons* 2 I loved their journey, 3 I love the older man younger woman trope, 4 I’m also a huge fan of the best friend’s older brother trope, 5 the smoking hot sex, 6 Cord counting AJ’s transgressions I can go on and on…

I haven’t read CTMA as yet even though it’s on my Kindle cause I don’t want to say goodbye and yes I know I can reread but…

AJ and Cord are one of my favorites. I love how she went after what she wanted and found out how much she really deserved and refused to settle for less.

Courtney Herbert

There is no way I could ever pick a favorite. I absolutely Love all of Lorelei’s books. She is the reason I started reading.

I think that I like Chassie, Trevor and Edgard from Rough, Raw and Ready. I like how their story was unconventional. Chassie and Trevor were happily married. Edgard came back and Trevor didn’t know what to do, then Edgard fell in love with Chassie.

Melissa A

I could never pick a favorite couple but if I did it would be Carson and Caro because they started it all. Showing their boys and daughter how to love hard and passionately.

Pansy Petal

Wow! You don’t ask much here. Fav couple!?! First, let me say, I have been a fan of Lorelei James since I read the very first Rough Riders book – Long Hard Ride – way back when, long time ago. So I will have to say Channing and Colby because it is all their fault I fell in love with this amazing clan of McKays and Lorelei James. Not to mention, well they were HOT! Sizzling! I need to read that one again. 😉 *fanning self*

Loved the interview. Thank you for sharing it with us!

haven’t read the series, do don’t have one

I loved AJ and Cord. I’m pretty new to both of her series, but I’m enjoying them both.

Jen B.

I love them all but I have a soft spot for Chassie, Trevor and Ed. I just loved their story!

Susan T.

I don’t know, it’s a hard choice. I love all the McKay’s men.

Karen G.

Thanks for the post, I love this series! It is hard to choose but the couple that comes to mind first is Dalton and Rory from Redneck Romeo. I like this because there is alot of growth in Dalton and he works hard to prove himself to both his family and Rory the he is a better man. Thanks for the chance to win!

Jenny Dauksa Schaber

How the hell is it possible to pick a favotite McKay?!?!?!?!?
I love them so much that I have the series in paperback
Those men really are all unique and make the perfect family. There is a special place in my heart for Chase and what he went through. It was the first time Lorelei got me to cry – NOT an easy feat.
I almost picked Carson because if not for him, half the series doesn’t exist. I also almost picked Keely for girl power, and she really is the BOMB!!!
Thanks for the chance!

Donna A

Love this series. I got my sister and her daughter in-law hooked on this series too. I can’t choose just one favorite but if I had to I’d say Carolyn.

Amy R

I loved Carson and Carolyn’s story but I actually started the series out of order with Jesse and Brandt who were the catalyst for my McKay addiction. A randomly picked up book from from my library new release shelf sent me into a massive Lorelei James glom read for Rough Riders and Black Top cowboys.

Melissa Dianne

It’s too hard to pick one couple. Love all the McKay men. I did love Rough, Raw and Ready with Chassie, Trevor and Ed with the shared love. Also love Cord and AJ’s story of never giving up for what you really want.

Barb Hill-Kidd

My Darling Lorelei,
I wrote a love letter to you and the RR series on my Facebook page. It’s because I fell in love with your books that I started going to Reader Events- the first to meet you and they changed my life. These books have changed my life.. I still think that I am cool enough to hang with Indy and Keeley.

I hope you are shopping for your next awesome pair of boots!

Chris Alexander

I have loved everything of Lorelei James’ that I’ve gotten my hands on.

Tammy Faris

WOW…an impossibly question and you know it! First off…AWESOME blog post! AWESOME! Now…if I just HAD to choose a favorite…and damn…that’s like picking a favorite kid or something…*sigh* I think I’d have to go with Chassie, Trevor and Edgard…the love the three have for each other just explodes from the pages. I’m sure going to miss the McKays…but am looking forward to ANYTHING Ms. Lorelei James writes! LOVE her!

I love all the Rough Riders books. It’s hard to pick a favorite. A big thank you to Lorelei James for writing such a great series!

Kelly H

Looks good. Putting on my TBR and wish list. Thanks for the chance

Krysten M

Hmm it’s very hard to pick just one favorite.. but I think my favorite is probably AJ and Cord 🙂

Linda Henderson

It is hard to pick, but I’d say Cord and AJ.

Linda Henderson

I forgot to say why. Because it was the first one I read of the series.

Sabrina P

Carson and Carolyn…that book was an emotional roller coaster for me. Beautiful ending to a well written series!

I was sad to hear the Rough Riders series is ending. I’ve been following it almost since the first book was published. It makes me very happy to hear that you are planning to write short stories set in the same world sometime in the future. I enjoyed reading the interview and I’m looking forward to Hillbilly Rockstar.

I forgot to add, my favourite couple is Carson and Carolyn because their story is my favourite from all the books and because they’re the couple that most appeals to me.

Felicia Miller

Thanks miss James for one of my all time fav series. Love the black top Cowboys series as well.

Sue G.

Keely and Jack Donohue because they were the first ones I read of the series!

Sharon Dyer

I love this series. Was so sad to see it end, but loved the way it ended. Love Lorelei James and everything she has written. Also, I agree with her I would marry Kade. He was always my favorite McKay and still is.

Diana Doan

I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t read this series yet so I don’t have a favorite. But I’m definitely looking forward to starting it!

Tina F

My favorite couple is Keely and Jack.
I would like the answer the same questions that you asked Lorelei James. One night stand? Colt
Summer fling? Chase
Marry? Kade
