Best New Release: Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews
It will probably shock no one that my favourite new release is Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews. I can’t help it, the woman has me hooked; her mixture of action, humour and a splash of romance as well as some excellent writing and fantastic characters has me racing back for more. I may have had to wait two years for another Kate Daniels installment, but it was well worth it.
Best New To Me: Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle
For a while this series completely took over my life, I couldn’t function properly without knowing what would happen next, I can’t believe I hadn’t read them before now. So beware when you start the Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle that you have lots of free time, a supply of tissues and at some points either your real boyfriend to hand or the battery operated version!
Best New Series: The Knitting in the City series by Penny Reid
This series took me completely by surprise, I borrowed it from Amazon on a whim and it started off a whole new obsession. The Knitting in the City series by Penny Reid, is not only a brand spanking new series, it is also Penny Reid’s debut series and it is fantastic! Funny and sexy, it gave me a brand new heroine to adore and an author to stalk.
Biggest Let Down: Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan
You get these books, which everyone and their granny is saying how great they are and so you figure you will give them a try. That is what happened to me when I read Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan, now, although it may not be the worse book I have read all year, it was definitely the biggest let down. Really? That was the asshole my friends were getting their knickers all damp and twisted about? I don’t think so. Not. For. Me.
Favourite Heroine: Kate Daniels from Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series
I am being a little bit predictable with my favourite heroine, been as she was also last years AND has already been on the list. But, I kind of have a girl crush on her, Kate Daniels from Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series will always have my top spot as favourite heroine, her tough chick attitude protects a compassionate but fierce heart. Love her! But coming up second I also really like Cassie Palmer from Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer series. Cassie manages to not only hold her own in a world full of people stronger and more powerful than her but also come out (kind of) on top.
Favourite Hero: Curran from Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series and Dex from the Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle
You may sense a theme when I say my favourite hero is Curran from Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series. I admit the whole series is a little bit of an obsession and I place the blame squarely on the sexy shoulders of a certain Beast Lord. Curran, is powerful, ruggedly sexy and clever as a cat, I can’ t help but be a drooling idiot whenever his name is mentioned. Another guy who has caught my eye this year is Dex from the Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle, there was a few reasons I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the books and he was one of the them. He is charismatic and slightly crazy, however, he is fascinating to read about not to mention damn sexy. But don’t worry Curran you will always have be the first one in my heart.
Favourite Couple: Qhuinn and Blay from Lover at Last in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward
My overriding thoughts when I think about this couple…It’s about damn time! Qhuinn and Blay from Lover at Last in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward are my favourite couple. It was with so much damn relief that I read them finally get the hell over it and get together like they were meant to. From the very beginning you know these guys are meant to be and reading Lover at Last proved that.
Best Sex Scene: The Professional by Kresley Cole
We are only meant to pick one scene, but I couldn’t do it, The Professional by Kresley Cole has two delicious sex scenes that got me all hot and bothered. One on a plane involving the hottest 69 I have ever read and the other in a closet…all this and they haven’t actually had sex yet. I think I might spontaneously combust if it gets much sexier, but I am fully prepared to read the next in the serial to find out.
Best Cover: Possession by JR Ward and Tangled by Emma Chase
It doesn’t take too much to make me happy in the cover department, if you don’t have a Fifty Shade reproduction cover, already you are winning, but the cover that caught my eye was Possession by JR Ward the beautiful amber sunset coloured wing, those gorgeous eyes and a few chains and I am extremely pleased that it is decorating my book shelf. My girlie parts disagree though and think Tangled by Emma Chase is the best cover, a hot guy wearing nothing but a bed sheet…I can kinda see their point.
Author of the Year: Karina Halle
Karina Halle is my AOY, her Experiment in Terror books exploded into my life and I haven’t been able to shake them since!
Best New Release: Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
I cannot tell you enough about this book. It’s dark and gritty and it was very well done. Best PNR book ever!!!
Best New To Me: Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas
I know, I know that this is an old title but I finally popped my Kleypas Cherry this year. After missing our Kleypas Challenge last year, I finally did it. It was a great romantic read.
Best New Series: SONS OF WRATH, REAL WALKER and EXECUTION UNDERGROUND!
My top 3… I really cannot pick only one for this category. There’s just too many new series released this year. So, I picked these books which all have very strong heroines with awesome story lines. 1. Soul Avenged (Sons of Wrath, #1) By Keri Lake, 2. Realm Walker (Realm Walker, #1) by Kathleen Collins 3. Twilight Hunter (Execution Underground, #1) by Kait Ballenger are my top 3 Best New Series.
Favorite Heroine: Hot Blooded (Jessica McClain, #2) by Amanda Carlson
Every time I think of “favorite heroine”, I think of some that can kick some major ass. She is physically and emotionally strong, supported and respected by many friends and is paired up with a sexy alpha hero. She also leads her own pack. There are a few heroines that qualify to be in this category but Jessica is at the top. She has proven herself many times and it has been great watching her grow strong with each installment of Jessica McClain series.
Favorite Hero: Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Talk about the most tortured, misjudged, misunderstood hero in the PNR world but had survived it all with his head held high. Styxx will give his own life to protect the people he loves despite his cruel past. And when it comes to his love, it has no bounds. It lasts for eternity and no one can replace his one true love. Styxx is my fave hero for 2013.
Best Sex Scene: The Professional by Kresley Cole
This is a hard one for me because I know that I’ve read several scenes the were very hot. However, my most recent read that had a very hot scene and is still totally ingrained in my brain is Kresley Cole’s The Professional. Though this closet scene is not realistic for in real life, Ms. Cole definitely made me rethink it. LOL Ms. Cole’s build up of the sexual tension in this book was just phenomenal.
Best Cover: Keri Lake’s Soul Avenged, Kathleen Collin’s Real Walker and Pamela Palmer’s A Kiss of Blood
I have taken a lot of liking to the Urban Fantasy genre this year. I just cannot get enough of the kick ass heroines in them. I picked covers, yes, covers because I cannot just pick one. I did decide to limit it to three though. First is Keri Lake’s Soul Avenged. Second is Kathleen Collin’s Real Walker and last, Pamela Palmer’s A Kiss of Blood. True to the covers, the protagonists are all very strong heroines.
Author of the Year: Cecy Robson
Author of the year really has to be someone who writes magnificent novels but also can interact with her readers, supporters and one who is respected by her colleagues. Honestly, not everyone has all these qualities but there are plenty that is more than qualified. Among my favorites are Jennifer Probst, Pamela Clare, Coreene Callahan, Lisa Renee Jones, Darynda Jones, Amanda Carlson, Marina Adair, and Keri Lake. But I know I have to pick only one. My author of the year is Cecy Robson who is one of the most down to earth authors I know. And the books she’s writes are pretty kick ass!!!
