What Does Gena Showalter Do All Day?
7:30. Wake up. Decide to “think” about what I need to do for the day—while still in bed.
8:00. Wake up for real and roll out of bed. Make a cup of tea (a mix of chamomile and ginger) and give the dogs a treat.
8:15. Answer email. Check website, Twitter and Facebook. All while eating breakfast (a cereal bar)
8:45. Start writing. Check split ends while “thinking.”
8:50. Check email. Check Twitter.
8:55. Write. Wonder why I’m so hungry.
9:30. Check email, Twitter, and Facebook. Wonder if it would be okay to have lunch so early. Decide to wait (don’t want to have to have dinner at 2:00 again…plus three snacks before the end of the day). Write.
9:45. Vow not to be distracted and write some more. Check split ends.
10:00. Pause to wonder why time is passing so slowly. When will lunchtime arrive? Write.
10:30. Pause to think it’s 11:30 in some states. Some people are probably already eating lunch—they’re so lucky! Write.
11:00. Rejoice because it’s now considered lunch in my time zone. Eat, and write.
11:30. Moan because I ate too much. Distract myself by writing some more. Finish my chapter for the day.
12:00. Take German Shepherd on a walk. Fight embarrassment every time he pauses to pee on a mailbox.
1:00. Finally shower. (You’re welcome, family.)
1:30. Check email, Twitter, and Facebook.
1:45. Get started on any interviews or posts that are due. Wonder why I’m so hungry. Surely a snack wouldn’t hurt. No, I can push through.
2:30. Pause to plan a murder—and not just in my book. Someone ate all the white cheddar Cheetos!
3:00. Remember I’m the one that actually at the white cheddar Cheetos last night in bed.
4:00. Break for a snack.
5:00. Decide to call it a day. And eat dinner.

Something hard slammed into me, knocking me face-first into the ground. Air exploded from my lungs, and dirt coated my tongue. Stars winked through my vision. I tried to crawl forward, but a heavy weight pinned me down. Fear threatened to overtake me, but I quickly rallied, twisting around and swinging out a fist.
Pain cut through my knuckles. Maybe I’d broken one. I’d hit the guy in the jaw—a solid, intractable jaw.
“Let me go!” I demanded, expecting to see red eyes. Paper-thin, rotting skin. Hair, hanging in clumps. Instead, I saw familiar violet eyes…and my blood heated in the most delicious way. I stilled.
“Cole? What are you doing? I…”
Was underneath him. My thoughts derailed. We’d lain like this before. Every other time, he’d been kissing me. Hands had wandered. My body had come alive. I didn’t have my body this time, I was in my spirit form, and yet I felt even more alive, as if I were connected to a generator, my nerve endings buzzing with energy.
His gaze drilled into mine…only to lower to my mouth and linger, everything about his expression softening. His breathing changed, emerging shallow and fast. “Are you okay? I couldn’t see it in your body, but your spirit is gaunt. You’ve lost weight, and there are shadows under your eyes. I wasn’t sure if you were a hiker who’d been lost for several days or a zombie.”
I stiffened, trying not to panic. “I’m okay.” But was I?
“Good. That’s good.” His thumb traced the rise of my cheeks. “Ali…”
I knew that look, that tone, that touch, and knew where this was headed if I didn’t put a stop to it. “Get off me,” I said, ashamed of my sudden breathlessness.
He stayed right where he was. “What are you doing to me? How are you making me forget what’s best for me…what’s best for you?”
