Interview and Giveaway with Lorelei James

Hi Lorelei!  Welcome back to Under the Covers.  The Blacktop Cowboys is a favorite series here and we are very excited to be celebrating the release of TURN AND BURN with you.

Thanks for having me back…I must not have misbehaved too badly last time <g>

*Won’t comment* 🙂 One thing I love about your books is the fun and flirty dialogue. Fletcher and Tanna go back and forth quite a bit. What is one tip you would give to authors about dialogue?

Oh, man, that’s a tough question because I don’t like giving anyone advice except for my kids! I think to make the dialogue believable you have to stay true to the characters and also know how people that age are talking to one another. To me there’s nothing that “ages” an author more than using wrong phrases and words that younger adults today would never use. It pulls me right out of the story. Since I have a teenage kid, as well as kids in their twenties, friends in their thirties as well as friends in every other age decade, I do a lot of listening. Yes, I’m the one eavesdropping on conversations in restaurants, bars, airports, discount stores, but no, I’m not taking notes. Not only does listening in give a feel for real dialogue, the way we speak out here in the wild west is different than other places and I try to stay as true to that as I can.

What’s your favorite sex scene in TURN AND BURN and why?

Now see, if I tell you, I’ll give it away and my readers won’t be surprised! So I’ll just sidestep the question and say when Tanna and Fletch were talking about the first time they had sex in the motel room the night they met, it gives a tiny sexy peek into what happened.

I have loved all your heroines you’ve written. What is one quality that you think all heroines should have?

I know one they shouldn’t have: that they don’t continually do something stupid that makes me roll my eyes. I have such a hard time with wimpy heroines. I understand that it takes all kinds of different people and different personalities to make the world, but female characters who cannot function on their own drive me batshit crazy. I’d rather read about strong women who have a modicum of control in some area of their life and don’t need to be rescued by a man, but having a man who understands them makes their life better. So that’s the kind of heroines I write. They’re not perfect, but they’re not doormats either.

Which of your cowboys have been your favorite to write and why?

All of them because they’re all so unique. I’ve learned as much about writing men and cowboys than I ever thought possible.  Because like in real life, there is no cookie cutter cowboy—many of them around here call themselves a rancher first. Then there are rodeo cowboys who are cut from a different cloth. Then there are the guys in ball caps and suits who might ride a Harley instead of a horse but they’re still cowboys on the inside. I’ve also learned that just slapping a cowboy hat, jeans and boots on a character doesn’t make him a cowboy—it’s a trait that’s born in them that isn’t outwardly visible and it has been such great fun to explore all those idiosyncrasies.

Though TURN AND BURN is scorching hot, it also deals with facing your fears. What message did you want to send to readers in this latest installment?

That if doesn’t make you a loser, or weak to ask for help when you really need it (like Tanna). And sometimes you are getting help and you don’t even realize it because it’s done so subtlety (like Fletch).

Are we going to get Eli’s story?

I’d love to write a novella about how Eli and Summer met and fell in love, so yes, eventually I’ll get it done when I’ve caught up on all my other contracts.

What has been the latest erotic book you’ve read and would you recommend it?

I love the Original Sinners series by Tiffany Reisz. Some writers talk a good game about writing outside the box and Tiffany does it in this series in spades. Blew me away—in a good way.

If you wrote a book about dating, what would be the first line?

There’s no such thing as a slut.

Did you know that “Kyle” has been a permanent vocabulary addition for the UTC girls? *naughty grin*

Do tell what that means…and will it make Celia jealous that you ladies are all lusting after her man?

Lets just say I don’t think she would want to know.  What’s next for Lorelei James?

I just finished BOUND the first book in the new Mastered Series and I’m getting set to work on UNWOUND the second book in that series—both books release in early 2014. Then comes DOCTOR FEELGOOD which is part of the Wild West Boys series, which releases in December and then I start on Blacktop Cowboys book 6, HILLBILLY ROCKSTAR which will release in August 2014.

turn and burn

Tanna Barker is a world champion barrel racer. But her personal life has been less of a success, and she’s feeling adrift. After her mother’s unexpected death, her father has remarried, and sold the Texas ranch she called home. Now a rodeo injury has left the restless spitfire holed up in Muddy Gap, unsure what her next move should be.

Until she meets her match in a wild, wild cowboy

Veterinarian August Fletcher has always put his job first. He’s never found a woman who could handle his on-the-road lifestyle. But when sassy, sexy Tanna blows into town, he finally finds the woman of his fantasies. And there’s something between them, but she claims she’s been burned by love ’em and leave ’em road dogs before. How can Fletch prove that he’s in it for the long haul, and that their sizzling relationship is better than winning any rodeo medal? It’ll take some sweet persuasion to convince Tanna that Muddy Gap is where she belongs.

I could see myself hanging out with Lorelei. If she let me shoot her 22 I would let her try my Walther Pistol and my Black and Pink Zebra Stripe AR 15,

Lorelei’s books sound so awesome and I’d love to win one to get started =). I agree girls that are doormats make me put the book down and conversation that doesn’t fit the time period/age of the characters puts me out of the book. I adore becoming one with the story. Thanks for the giveaway and interview.
