Strong and Silent by Elisabeth Barrett
A man of few words can be extraordinarily sexy. He’s watchful, intelligent, and wise, but sparing with what he says. When he finally does speak, it’s something insightful and real. His words pack a punch.
The hero of Slow Summer Burn, the fourth (and final) book in my Cape Cod-set Star Harbor series, is just such a man. Val Grayson, the oldest brother in the Grayson clan, has watched his three younger brothers move back to Star Harbor and find love. Now it’s his turn, though he sure isn’t making things easy for himself. He’s spent so long focusing on getting his brothers settled that he’s missed out on a lot in life. And Val’s not like most other guys: he lives on a houseboat, works as a DEA agent, and really doesn’t speak much at all. But when he crosses paths with socialite Cameron Stahl, he’s drawn to her strength and beauty.
Val epitomizes the strong, silent type, but he can let the words fly on the right occasion, namely when it comes to claiming Cameron for his own. To that end, the good folks at UTC have asked me to compile Val’s top five lines. I’ve also given a little context to set things up. Please let me know which ones you like the best (or other faves, if you’ve already read the book).
1. Val says what he means, and he means what he says. Here’s a little foreplay to whet your appetite:
“You are such a tease,” she mock-complained.
He stopped dead in his tracks and she stopped, too. “Actually, I’m not,” he said, trailing a finger down her jaw and enjoying her little shiver. “But I can be.”
“I like the way that feels,” she whispered.
“Yeah? That makes two of us.”
2. On the other hand, he can be pretty sweet:
“I wouldn’t have figured you to be a champagne kind of guy.”
“I’m not. But I aim to please, and I know you are definitely a champagne kind of gal.”
3. But he isn’t afraid to be a little cheeky when the situation warrants:
“Do you want to head back to your place to get a swimsuit?”
“And the alternative is . . .?”
“No swimsuit.” A wicked grin formed on his face.
4. One of the things I liked best about writing Slow Summer Burn was highlighting the seemingly vast differences between Cam and Val’s backgrounds. This snippet comes after they’ve spent a particularly sexy night on Val’s houseboat.
“Sleep well?” he asked, staring out at the water.
“Yes, thank you. And you?”
“There you go, being polite again.” He turned to her, his gaze hot. “How do you think I slept, Cam? I slept great. Got you in my bed, tiring me out, keeping me warm. You keep moaning like that for me, and I’m going to be useless for anything else.”
5. And finally, when Val talks, he talks. Here he is, telling Cam how much he’s falling for her:
I’m not one for waxing poetic. Hell, I’m barely one for talking, but I gotta tell you that when we’re together, I want to talk, just to hear you laugh. To hear you say something back to me, all proper and polite. And when you look at me in that way with those eyes—the way you’re doing right now—things like your social status and my age and your parents and my job just kind of fade away. They don’t matter anymore.” He paused and swallowed. “Nothing matters, except for you.
Yeah, I think he’s sexy, too.
As the sizzling Star Harbor series concludes, the fourth sexy Grayson brother, a dedicated DEA agent, shows a high-society beauty the true meaning of love.
Cameron Stahl has everything, so why does she feel like her life is incomplete? A beautiful Boston socialite and a successful entrepreneur, she’s just opened her second boutique in Star Harbor and business is booming. But one searing look from Val Grayson sends fire through her body and shows her exactly what’s missing from her life: a real man who doesn’t play games and who makes her feel like the most desired woman on earth.
DEA agent Val Grayson has always looked after his brothers. Now it’s his turn to find love—though Cam is the last sort of woman he ever dreamed he’d fall for. When courageous Cam realizes she has the insider connections to help Val take down a major drug player within Boston’s political elite, he can’t stop her from putting herself in danger. But as the drug bust of his career looms, all Val cares about is saving the woman he loves before it’s too late.
