Interview and Giveaway with Dee Davis

DEE DAVIS

Welcome back to UTC! Lets talk about DOUBLE DANGER.  This is the 6th book in the A-Tac series.  What do you think is key to continue a romantic suspense series and keep the stories fresh?

Excellent question.  I think in part it’s about finding new depth in characters readers already know.  Whether it’s because one of them is featured as the hero or heroine of the newest novel, or whether it’s simply a reflection of the fact that all the members of A-Tac have lives that are constantly changing.  Lara left the team to go to Africa.  Madeline and Drake have a baby girl.  Nash and Annie’s Adam is growing up and she’s decided to be a full-time mom.  Simon is finding his way as A-Tac’s newest member.  And Hannah and Harrison finally lowered walls that allowed both of them not only to begin to heal, but to find each other.  So just like real life, the world inside of A-Tac is evolving.  I also enjoy taking the team to new locations.  Books in the series have been set all around the world.  From Colorado to Columbia to New York and in the 7th novel, the Golden Triangle along the Mekong River.

I always wonder about the research that goes into this genre.  What research did you have to do for DOUBLE DANGER and was there something in particular that stands out when compared to other books?

I do a lot of research for all my books.  This one was set in and around New York, which, since I live here, makes some of the research easier.  I can use (and occasionally modify) locations that I already am familiar with.   (Yankee Stadium, the UN, Fulton Seaport, the Hospital for Special Surgery, the FDR – to name a few).  The technical aspects of all the A-Tac books require research as well.  Whether it’s building and dismantling a bomb, understanding the effects of anthrax, working out trajectory for a gunfight, or learning about key-loggers and internet back tracing, I have to understand how it all works so that I can write about it with some degree of authority.

What was the hardest scene to write in the book?

I think the scene where J.J. finally comes clean with Simon.  And the two of them face their past.  They have enormous hurdles to overcome and taking them there was difficult for me as well as J.J. and Simon.   Logistically, the scene at the UN special offices was also a challenge, I needed to choreograph it so that it flowed seamlessly into the finale of the book, and it took me a while to get it where I needed it to be.

What is it about military men that keeps you writing about them?

Interesting question.  I think maybe it’s the dichotomy of self-sacrifice and service on the one hand and the need to be an adrenaline jockey on the other.  That combination appeals to me.  Along with the strength, both mental and physical, that is required.  And it’s always fascinated me that there is such a strong chain of duty and command.  The most important thing being teamwork at the highest levels.

We are always curious what our favorite authors are reading.  What books are currently sitting on your nightstand?

I just finished a wonderful book called The Great Coat, by Helen Dunmore.  It’s a ghost story and a really compelling read.  On my nightstand right this moment is Susan Wiggs’ the Winter Lodge.

DIRE DISTRACTION is coming next year.  Can you tell us anything about it?

Dire Distraction is the last (at least for now) of the A-Tac books.  And it is, fittingly, Avery’s story.  As A-Tac’s commander he has always been the team’s anchor.  And now, with one shocking discovery, everything he believed to be true is suddenly thrown into question.  The past ramming full-speed into the present as the Consortium moves to stop A-Tac once and for all.

If we were unforgivably rude and pulled at random five things from your hand bag, what would we find?

At the moment, a tape measure (we’ve been house hunting), a packet of Kleenex (from Japan), a green plastic whistle (a girl never knows when she might need to make some noise), bookmarks (A-Tac) and some very old mints (but hey they don’t go bad do they?).

If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

Take a deep breath and live in the now.  Life is too short to do otherwise.

doubledanger

Ignoring his instincts once cost Simon a vital op-and the life of his best friend, Ryan. Now as escalating, violent attacks hit A-Tac, another person he loves is in danger. Homeland Security agent Jillian Montgomery’s investigation has suddenly brought her back into Simon’s life, and unless they can learn to trust each other, their dangerous mission will fail.

After her husband Ryan’s death, Jillian dedicates herself to saving others. She can’t afford to be tempted by Simon, even though his every touch reignites the desire they once shared. But in the last desperate minutes before disaster strikes, their second chance at love might be the most lethal trap of all . . .

Romantic suspense is tied for my favorite genre. I am so glad you have kept the “hawt” book covers.

I’m smiling that there is a tape measure in your pocketbook. One never knows where and when that may come in handy and for what purpose!

Thanks go to UTC fro hosting another fabulous author.

I love the interview, the excerpt and the smolderingly HOT cover, and considering the content of the story line, the research must be quite time consuming too.
