If you are looking for a fun and flirty read for the weekend, then look no further. Jennifer Bernard delivers in spades. I knew from the cover of this book that there would be a ton of jokes and very cute, romantic moments and I was right!

In the first book of the Bachelor Fireman of San Gabriel, THE FIREMAN WHO LOVED ME, Melissa McGuire finds herself at an auction with Nelly, her grandmother. Now Melissa is a much more reserved person than her spitfire grandmother despite her younger age, but I think compared to Nelly anyone would be. You see, Nelly has the tendency to say whatever she likes and do whatever is on her mind. She has no filter and when Nelly decides to bring her granddaughter to an auction to bid on bachelors, Melissa can’t help but feel embarrassed by her grandmother’s enthusiasm.

Despite her grandmother’s good intentions, Melissa can’t help but feel that Nelly is intruding in places she has no business in. Melissa doesn’t need a man in her life to feel complete, but apparently Nelly disagrees. So Nelly bids on the hottest bachelor at the auction and sets up a date for her granddaughter. However, Ryan, the hot stud feels less than thrilled that he has to go play bingo with the old geezer. Now, Ryan wants to bow out and instead asks his Captain, Harry Brody to fill in his space.

Not one to turn a nice lady down, Brody agrees to the date but soon finds out that Nelly isn’t as sweet or as passive as he thinks most older women are. By the start of the night, Brody finds himself on a date with Melissa instead and he can’t really believe his luck.

THE FIREMAN WHO LOVED ME was cute and funny as expected. Most of the comic relief came from Nelly and her outrageous demands, but also from Ella, Melissa’s co-worker and the hottest news reporter on the face of the planet. While Ella was fun and interesting at first, there were times when she pushed it too far. I wished for a little more balance because she was a little over the top sometimes, pushing herself into scenarios where she had no business in.

There was also a subplot about a little abused boy who contacted Melissa. Of course, she wanted to do all that she could to help him, but I felt like this storyline was a little misplaced in this book. I’m not exactly sure how or why it was put in other than to bring a little suspense or perhaps add a darker tone. In the end, I didn’t feel like it was executed well enough.

Melissa and Brody are very cute together, bringing out the best (and the worst) in each other . I thought that Bernard did a good job of developing their relationship. With so many other supporting characters with notable airtime, she managed to create a fun and flirty way of bringing two reluctant people together.

I’m interested to read HOT FOR FIREMAN next and see how Bernard tackles the hottie studmuffin, Ryan Blake!

I’m an obsessive makeup junkie and a compulsive reader. I like to call Under the Covers Book Blog my stomping ground, but when I’m not talking about books with my girls, I write New Adult Dystopian and Contemporary Romance under the pen name Ana Jolene (http://www.anajolene.com). I also work as a virtual assistant for authors. You also can find me as a reviewer and columnist for FreshFiction.com.

When it comes to books I’m pretty adventurous. I read everything from Paranormal Romance to Urban Fantasy, New Adult, BDSM, LGBT fiction, Cozy Mysteries and even YA. If it’s got the littlest trace of romance in it, then I’ll probably read it. That being said, my all-time favorite authors are J.R. Ward and Karen Marie Moning.

When I’m not submerged in a good book, you can find me musing about makeup and planners or dreaming about Kpop boys and beaches. Until then, check out my reviews and let’s talk books!
