Welcome back to Under the Covers, Kate! You have a new book out called THE WICKED VAMPIRE. It’s part of the Last True Vampire series. For readers who may be new to your books, can you please tell us about the series quickly?

The Last True Vampire series begins with the last vampire in existence who is slowly resurrecting the race despite a secret society known as the Sortiari’s efforts to eradicate them. Due to the fact that there are very few vampires in the world, they sometimes find their mates in other supernatural creatures who tether their souls, forming a mate bond. In the midst of these tetherings, the vampires are making new alliances and navigating a changing political landscape as the berserkers who have killed vampires for the Sortiari begin to stage a coup in order to finish what they’ve started and wipe out the vampire race.

Tell us more about your vampires. What sets them apart from other vampires?

My vampires share a lot of similarities with common mythologies, but also a few differences. They can’t be out during the day and silver weakens them. They need to consume blood in order to keep their bodily functions and digestive systems operating but at the same time, they don’t need food to survive. And the most interesting differences are that only dhampirs can become vampires, and once turned, the vampire’s soul is stripped from its body. When a vampire becomes tethered by their mate, their soul is returned and forever bound to their mate.

You’re able to mix passion and action well in this series. What would you say is the trick in maintaining a good balance between the two?

Thank you! I do love a good balance between action and romance. I think the trick to maintaining that is to not forget the overreaching story arch. The romance is only part of the story and there’s a running plot throughout the series that has to be maintained. I like to keep my hero and heroine on their toes. To give them an adventure and hardships to overcome in the midst of their romance. It ups the stakes and makes the HEA that much more rewarding.

What was your favorite thing about the romance between Sasha and Ewan?

My favorite aspect of Sasha and Ewan’s romance was the enemies to lovers angle. There is an instant connection and heat between them that they can’t deny and at the same time, they’re both grappling with the consequences of their actions since berserkers and vampires are mortal enemies. They’re both strong characters who constantly butt heads and I have a soft spot for antagonistic lovers.

If you had to describe this book in 3 words what would they be?

Wild. Hot. Intense.

This is book 6 in the series. What do you think is most important to keeping your stories fresh with each installment in the series?

Like with balancing romance and action, the key to keeping the stories fresh is to be sure to maintain the overreaching story arch. Each couple in the True Vampire world plays a part in the larger scope of the power struggle between the different factions in the world.

Do you have any auto-buy authors?

Definitely! Patricia Briggs, Kresley Cole, Darynda Jones, Bernard Cornwell, Amanda Carlson, Julia Ann Walker, and Chelsea Mueller are just some of my faves!

What are 5 things you won’t leave home without?

My gym bag, lip balm, a spare jacket, water bottle, and extra hair ties are all rattling around in my car on any given day.

What does your writing space look like?

It depends on my mood. I don’t always write in the same place. Sometimes I’ll camp out on the couch or hang out on my bed. Other times, I’ll write at the kitchen table or at a coffee shop. I’m sort of antsy so I tend to move around a lot.

What’s the last book you read and loved?

Chelsea Mueller’s debut urban fantasy, BORROWED SOULS. Callie Delgado is my favorite kind of heroine—tough and complex—and I loved the fast pace and inventive story line.

What are you working on next?

I’ve got a lot of irons in the fire right now! I’m currently working on the sixth book in my Shaede Assassin series (written as Amanda Bonilla) as well as plotting out the next book in the Last True Vampire world. I’m also working on a couple of new series, one PNR and one UF that I’m hoping will be out in the world soon as well.

Thanks so much for sharing with us today!

Thanks so much for having me as a guest!

Genres: Paranormal Romance

The world melted away. Nothing mattered but this moment. His mouth on hers, the heat of his kiss, her own lightheadedness, and the way he awakened her.
If she had it her way, reality would never barge in to interrupt them again.

Sasha Ivanov is a vampire party girl, living life on the edge. Drinking, dancing, and hooking up--she’s tired of playing it safe. But when she finds herself tethered to a mortal enemy, she realizes she’s about to play the most dangerous game of all.

Liam Brún’s existence has been steeped in violence. A berserker, he is viewed as nothing more than a mindless fiend in the supernatural world, and Liam has no qualms with perpetuating that myth. Until he finds himself thrown into the company of a gorgeous vampire who claims he’s her mate. The stunning beauty is able to soothe the beast in his soul like no other ever could. But Sasha is his clan’s nemesis, and Liam and Sasha must decide: is loyalty most important? Or could their budding love trump all?
