Welcome back to Under the Covers, Marie! We are so thrilled about JUST THE THING, your latest book in the Donnigans series. For readers who may be new to this series, can you tell us what this series is about?
The Donnigans series centers around the Donnigan siblings, who are cousins to the McCauley brothers (about whom I wrote my first contemporary series for Sourcebooks.) The Donnigans are a tight-knit family who deal with problems head-on with humor, snark, and love. The oldest brothers are Marines who recently left the Marine Corps, and both have come back damaged. Landon has control issues and a need to take care of everyone. Gavin has a bad time dealing with survivor’s guilt and PTSD, masking his pain with laughter, booze, and women. And Hope, the lone daughter in the family, keeps making bad choices, never able to live up to her mother’s demanding standards. Together, they find their paths to happiness through love, loss, and the prank wars. 🙂
I’m head over heels in love with Gavin! What would you say is his best quality? What is the thing that you think that he needs to work on?
I loved Gavin so much! His best quality is his big heart. He uses humor to hide that he’s hurting, because he doesn’t want his family worrying about him. He always cares about the other guy, doing the right thing, even while he’s suffering inside. He needs to better take care of himself so he can be happy too. But I will say my favorite aspect of him is his sarcastic sense of humor.
The banter in this story is very well done. What would you say is the key to creating chemistry between the main couple?
They have to be real, at least, to me. Gavin was a fully fleshed out person before the first Donnigans book was written. Zoe came along after. Once I realized her history and issues, she naturally fit with Gavin. They balance each other out, which made their dialogue so much fun to write.
Family is a huge aspect of this book. What was the greatest challenge when it comes to writing about such a close-knit family?
Overdoing too many characters at once. J I try to write the basic family, but we’re nothing in life without friends and family–not related by blood, but by love. More characters come to life, and I find myself constantly wanting to write a new story for them.
Do you have a character that you think is most like you (whether from your books or someone else’s)?
Hmm. Good question. I’m an amalgam of a lot of my characters, both male and female. I’m snarky, can be controlling, haven’t quite found that Mr. Right, and I spent time in the Marine Corps. Call me a romantic Frankenstein.
Have you had a bad case of writer’s block? And if so, how did you get through it?
When I’m blocked on a story, it’s because the characters aren’t working or the plot is going in the wrong way, and my subconscious won’t let me go forward until I fix it. After writing for so many years, I now know that’s why I’ll freeze on a story. So I usually go back through it, end up deleting a good bit, then write and it flows.
When you are not writing, what can we find you doing?
I’m either walking Cookie, the puppy, nagging my kids to put their shoes/toys/clothes away, or taking in the glorious Central Oregon summer. It’s hiking season!
Lastly, what’s next for Marie Harte?
I’m working on my paranormal shapeshifter series, Circe’s Recruits 2.0, involving genetic engineering, suspense, and steamy scenes among a pack of bonding shifters on a mission to get the bad guy. And in September, ALL I WANT FOR HALLOWEEN releases. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I was thrilled to write a funny, sexy story centered around trick or treating. And the story features Sadie Liberato! Sadie is Ava’s sister, from A SURE THING (Donnigans book 1). I love writing books with connecting characters.
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for having me. I love Under the Covers!
