Weekend Highlight: The Chosen by J.R. Ward
The Chosen
by J.R. Ward

Released: April 4h 2017
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood #15
Published by Penguin
Genres: Paranormal Romance

A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood in J. R. Ward’s newest novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier’s fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor’s life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear—even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell, and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love . . . or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

I’m a 30 something sun lover living in the Big Apple (read New York).I’m a book and coffee addict and lover of all things elephants.

I get easily distracted by pictures of sexy guys and have tons of book boyfriends.I keep all my alpha males chained to my basement and guard them fiercely.*Back off bitches*I like to see Jason Momoa as a lot of those boyfriends, because ….. mmmmmmm JASON.MOMOA!

I’m a part time graphic designer (yes, everything you see on UTC has been done by me), run my husband's business from home and on a good day I’m a self appointed superwoman (she who can do it all).I love blogging with my girls and I couldn’t do it any other way!My first love is everything paranormal, but in the past few years I’ve re-learned to love contemporary romance.Every once in a while I like to mix things up with a historical romance, a steampunk or an LGBT book.Because I need variety to avoid book slumps.I don’t always need an HEA although I prefer one, and I love authors that can rip my heart out and make me ugly cry.

So conflicted but ultimately my fangirl won out! I’m so anxious about V and Jane! after I finished the series I started re reading the whole series again!

Good review! I have seen so many reviews where people are upset about the side characters. I am a huge BDB fan but I haven’t read The Chosen yet. I am glad to see that Layla had a lot of character growth, I admit that I have always been a Layla Hater. I plan to read it ASAP!

Great review!!! This is the book that I most wanted to read!!! I known xcor is the bad boy vamp, but I have felt sorry for how his life has been.I know he’s a loyal and cares about layal, she’s the first women to show him kindness and caring I want them to have their happily ever after!!! I would love to win this so much!! Thanks for the chance!!!

  4. You did great biting your tongue about your conflicts, Francesca. I’m not sure if we have mixed feelings about the same thing, but yes, a few choices in this one left me not excited for them. And the conflict for the established couple has really made me uneasy as had the interesting twist for Trez. Loved the Layla/XCor storyline for sure.

    • We will be posting a group review soon(ish) which will include spoilers and we can all rant there then. I know there’s a lot of people that hate getting spoiled for this series so we thought we could do one spoiler free and biting tongue and the other give free reign. LOL Not loving the Trez twist (mainly because of timing) and yes the conflict for the established couple is what probably got me the most angry. Although I felt so many of them acted out of character I really didn’t know who to punch first.

Thank you for your post. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book <3 I'm first on our library's waiting list but they haven't ordered it yet, sigh. I'd love to win a copy and donate it when I finish reading it. Thanks for the giveaway!

Spoiler free is against the point, IMO. I want to know what a book is really about, beyond what the blurb tells me, even if just a little bit of detail. I’m also not a big fan of this trend toward video reviews. I like the written articles. I’m not always in a place where it’s convenient for video sounds to be overheard, or reading these posts at a “reasonable” hour.

I adored Layla, she rocked her own power. There were 3 Brothers I wanted to punch. They made poor decisions and yes forgiveness was given too quickly. Groveling could have been better. Will love to see more of the BoB’s though!

Thanks for keeping it spoiler free. Can’t wait to get to reading! Even after so many books, Ms. Ward delivers in her BDB world; where so many other authors fail.
