Interview with Tracy Solheim

Hi Tracy! Welcome to Under the Covers! For readers who may be new to your series, could you please tell us more about your Second Chance series?

Hi and thanks so much for hosting me on your blog! This series revolves around the McAlister family, five adult siblings who couldn’t wait to get out of the small town they grew up in. One by one, though, they each make their way back to the small coastal town of Chances Inlet, North Carolina, for a second chance at love. The family’s matriarch, Patricia, is a new widow who owns a bed and breakfast in the town. She’s in a relationship with the town’s sheriff—a man five years her junior. The McAlister siblings have varying opinions about their mother’s love life and they’re not above meddling!

ALL THEY EVER WANTED is book two in the series. Miles McAlister has a lot on his plate when he returns to his hometown. What was the biggest challenge in writing this story? How did you overcome it?

Miles is definitely a complicated man! When I first introduced him in the first book, Back to Before, he was a bit of a jerk. But readers were seeing him through the point of view of his younger brother and his mother. My biggest challenge was redeeming him enough to make him worthy of being a romance hero. In this book, readers get a glimpse inside Miles’ point of view and his ego. Once they are privy to some of his secrets, they understand that he has good reason for why he behaves like he does.

Tell us more about Lori who seems to be a more complicated character than readers may expect.

Lori is a victim of circumstance. She’s spent most of her life dreaming of something more. When she finally gets it, she realizes that everything comes with a price. Now she’s on the run, trying not to cause any more collateral damage. When Patricia is injured, Lori risks staying in town longer than is wise because she doesn’t want to let down the woman who has been sheltering her. Of course, staying in Chances Inlet also means that she’ll be forced to deal with the sexual pull that Miles McAlister presents. Lori is still struggling with how to rein in her desires.

What’s your favorite thing about writing a small town romance?

Growing up military, I always envied those people who lived in the same town all of their lives. I craved the continuity of knowing my neighbors and classmates from cradle to grave; or knowing every creak of the stairs and groan of the radiator in our home. So, it stands to reason that when I ventured into the fantasy world that existed in my head, it would be to a small town where everyone knows everyone else. Let’s face it, there’s something comforting about the idea of small town life. The smiles are warmer, the pace is slower, the air is fresher. At least in the world of fiction.

I love reading and writing small town romances because they present so many opportunities for recurring secondary characters—the waitress at the dinner, the curmudgeon plumber, the barista. The town itself can also evolve into as a character in some books. I based Chances Inlet on the small town in North Carolina where my family has vacationed for nearly twenty-five years. The town is called Southport and readers might recognize it from Nicholas Spark’s book Safe Haven. But I saw it first!

What’s your favorite second chance romance book?

Lisa Kleypas’ Again the Magic is at the top of the list of many! It’s a favorite trope of mine.

When you’re not writing, what can we find you doing?

There’s not a day when I’m not writing. It’s become an addiction. But I do have a life away from my computer—sort of. I spend a lot of time at the barn with my daughter and the horse she bought with the advance from my first novel. At least she named her after the book! I love watching the two of them together and it is nice to get out of the writing cave once in a while.

If we were unforgivably rude and looked in your purse, what would we find?

Gum. Three pairs of readers. My cellphone that doubles as a dictation machine most of the time. I tell people I write most of my books by ‘Siri’. There’s also an assortment of flavored lip balm. I’m addicted!

What you won’t find is a pen. I swear my purse swallows them up. I put one in there every time I leave the house but I can’t seem to find one when I need one!

What are you currently working on?

I just finished a 50K word novella for Tule Publishing. It’s the first in a series about smokejumpers in Montana. This was such a fun project because I had to coordinate characters, locales, and storylines with the four other authors writing the follow-up books in the series. Look for it early this summer. I also have another football romance that I’m wrapping up. This one involves the team’s placekicker who is Scottish and has a wee problem with his immigration status. That one will be out during the 2016 football season. After that, I’ve got more books involving the McAlister family in the works.

Thanks so much for stopping by today and talking to us!

All They Ever Wanted

Series: Second Chances #2
Published by Berkley
Pages: 320

In the new Second Chances novel by the author of Back to Before, even love might not prove strong enough to save a man’s promising future from a woman’s hidden past...

All he ever fought for...

Aspiring congressman Miles McAlister has dreamed of representing his hometown of Chances Inlet, North Carolina, since he was a boy. So when he’s asked to help run his mother’s bed and breakfast he moves home and rolls out his campaign at the same time. But political stardom isn’t a given, especially when he’s expected to compromise the very ideals he’s trying to uphold. Making matters worse is the inn’s stubborn, and distractingly beautiful cook. He’s loved and lost before, so falling for Lori Buchman is not part of his plan.

All she ever feared...

Lori just wants to do her job and be left alone until she can safely move on. The last thing she needs is to get involved with her boss’s son. Miles proves to be too sexy to ignore, however. Their heated fling elicits feelings deeper than either anticipated. But everything about Lori is a lie. She’s harboring a secret that’ll destroy Miles’s career, and when the truth gets out it’s going to shock Chances Inlet to its core, forcing Miles to make the hardest decision of his life.
