I have a confession to make. I don’t read many contemporary romance novels. It’s not that I have anything against them. They’re just an avenue I have yet to explore in romance. I’ve heard a lot about Julie James and her books for awhile now. But it wasn’t until the DABWAHA competition that I realized that there must be a reason why readers adore her. And after reading A Lot Like Love, I know why.

I’m not quite sure how to even begin speaking about all the good things about this book. I fear I’ll sound like a complete fangirl and embarrass myself. But you know what? To hell with it! JULIE JAMES ROCKS!

First off, I want to talk about how AMAZING her characters are! When I first read the blurb to ALLL, I saw that the heroine, Jordan Rhoads was a gorgeous blonde (am jealous) and a heiress (even more jealous). With this description, it’s obvious who came to mind first – Paris Hilton (I’m trying to suppress my shudders here). But when I started reading ALLL, I realized that Jordan is NOTHING like what I thought she would be. James surprised me by making Jordan a down-to-earth sweetheart who has a great work ethic and a sassiness that I loved! Jordan is not your typical heiress. In fact, I would definitely agree with Xander and Nick on this and say that Jordan was seriously out of their league! She was a fantastic heroine that I loved to bits!

And then there’s Nick McCall who is a dream! I loved all his sarcastic quips and his don’t-fuck-with-me stare! And let me tell you, the fact that he can handle a gun is hotter as hell! Jordan and Nick were perfect together! I loved their idle banter and their heated arguments. The two were amazing!

I can’t forget Kyle Rhoads aka Sawyer who is Jordan’s brother. Kyle is a trip even as he is doing his time in prison for his twitter meltdown. He has some of the best lines in this entire book and I thought that if Nick or Jordan weren’t such strong characters on their own, then Kyle could have stolen the show! I loved the brother-sister love between Kyle and Jordan. I cannot wait to read About that Night which will be Kyle’s book! So excited!

Apart from the amazing characterization and hot romance, there’s a great suspense subplot that had my eyes glued to the pages. I devoured this book and I almost wished I slowed down a little. In the end, it was worth it. Every page is fantastic. With the right amount of humor, James had me laughing out loud, gaining me some pretty awkward stares in public.

If I wasn’t a Julie James fan before, I certainly am now! For fans of all types of romance, Julie James is one you must check out. A Lot Like Love is a perfect summer read to heat up your vacations!

P.S. IS THAT JED HILL ON THE COVER?! I recognize that sexy jaw and mouth!

Favourite Quote:
Something inside Nick snapped.
That was his fake girlfriend in there. Sitting at the table where they had just shared cheese fries the night before. And if she thoughts he could throw scorching hot-sex- looks to any pansy-ass scarf-boy who wandered into her shop, she had another thing coming. He had a look of his own to show the douchebag. It was time to break out the don’t-fuck-with-me face.

Blogger/Reviewer at Under the Covers Book Blog
I’m a 26 year old obsessive makeup junkie and a compulsive reader. I like to call Under the Covers Book Blog my stomping ground, but when I’m not talking about books with my girls, I’m also a reviewer for FreshFiction.com. Over there, I’m also a columnist. I have a column called Into the Night that discusses the latest and greatest news in the Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy genre. I also work as a virtual assistant for authors.

When it comes to books I’m pretty adventurous. I read everything from Paranormal Romance to Urban Fantasy, to New Adult, BDSM, LGBT fiction and even YA. If it’s got the littlest trace of romance in it, I’ll probably read it. That being said, my all-time favorite authors are J.R. Ward and Karen Marie Moning.

When I’m not submerged in a good book, you can find me musing about makeup and fashion or dreaming about boys and beaches. My love for all things David Gandy is well documented on the Internet and we’ll be getting married shortly. I’ll be sure to send you an invite to the wedding! ;P Until then, check out my reviews and let’s talk books!

  1. I have this one on my shelf but haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I have read 2 of her other books, which were both great contemporary romance reads. I only wish there was a little more smuttiness to them.

  2. I’m reading Something About You right now! So far I’m loving it as much as this one!

I thought the smut was enough for their relationship, though I won’t complain if there’s more.

I love it too Jodie! But Jed needs to lift his hand off that ladies ass.

  3. I loved “Something About You” (the guys bantering about “meet cute”) and am looking forward to reading this one.

Oh yeah, that is Jed Hill alright. Too bad he’s in a suit.

  4. Ren

After I meet Annie, I have some “because Annie said it good, so I will read it” books 😛

But in a good way of course! ^_^
I agree with part Jed must lift his hand off. He can use that hand at my ass 😛

  5. Sheree, Something About You is great! I’m loving it so far! Really liking the heroine!

LOL, Ren! You love me, you know you do! You’re my sexy men stalker buddy!

Hi bumpsintheroad! Thanks for the follow! And I hope you enjoy this one as much as I am!

  6. Hands down without any hesitance on my part, James is the best ever Contemporary Romance author out there! I have not rated any of her book less than a 5 and if I could I would rate it more!

I don’t like to recommend books to my fellow readers, because everyone has different tatstes. A book that you love & adore and would go black & blue raving about someone else just might not find the same appeal. But I have recommended all of James books to my friends! Love her & her books.
